It’s no secret that the University of Utah has produced some stellar athletes through their football program over the years. For this episode of Droppin Dimes, two of them joined the show to discuss what they’ve been up to since their playing days at the U.
Both Jesse Boone and Matt Martinez continue to find success off the field these days. Boone graduated in 2005 with an undergraduate degree in economics and business management in addition to his Masters degree in business administration. After finding eight years of success as a professional football player with the Cincinnati Bengals, Oakland Raiders, Rhein Fire of NFL Europe and the Las Vegas Locos of UFL, Boone is now a Broker and the Owner of Redzone Real Estate, specializing in residential rental investing.
Martinez graduated from the U in 2012 with a double major in economics and sociology and a criminal background minor. While playing football at the U, Martinez served as Team Captain, he also made the All-Academic Pac 12/Mountain West Team, and was the winner of six bowl games, including the Sugar Bowl.
Boone and Martinez know football doesn’t last forever – that’s why they have made it their mission to prepare the current players at the University of Utah for life after football by establishing Ute Athlete Connect, which helps athletes transition into the workforce.
During the podcast we also talked about their other foundations, what it’s really like playing in the NFL, and previewed the upcoming football season at the U.

Foundations and charitable giving:
Real Salt Lake fans can probably name every player on the team and more than likely follow the club on all social media platforms. But do you know who the person is behind the Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat posts, and all media-related items involving the team? That person is Tyler Gibbons.
From running the cameras and capturing the big plays, fan moments, and more, Gibbons is the driving force behind Real Salt Lake’s digital content. He joined Droppin Dimes to give us the play-by-play on how things work behind the scenes at RSL.
During the podcast Gibbons previews the club’s big exhibition match against Manchester United, gives insight into covering the NBA, his take on super teams and talks a little hip-hop.
Sorry, he doesn’t drop any spoilers or give any clues as to what players the team is working to acquire over the summer.

Social Media Handles:
Gordon Hayward shook up social media Tuesday when he announced that he was taking his talents to the Boston Celtics. The former forward for the Utah Jazz made the announcement via Twitter through a blog titled “Thank you Utah.”

Ben Dowsett, Deputy Editor for Basketball Insiders joined Episode 10 of Dropping Dimes to discuss Hayward’s move and what this does to the Jazz organization.
Tony Jones, Utah Jazz and NBA Writer for the Salt Lake Tribune, stopped by for episode nine of Droppin Dimes.
From the NBA Draft to the Utah Jazz becoming a superstar team, and everything in between, Tony dished out his opinion on the latest hot topics. Throughout this podcast, Kyle Kuzma, power forward, formally with the Runnin’ Utes, was a topic of discussion. Tony predicts where he will land in the draft and discussed if Kuzma is overhyped or underhyped.

How do you balance being the top Utah Jazz Writer for the Deseret News and being a Health Coach? It’s not easy but someone has got to do it. That someone is Jody Genessy or as most of you might know him from Twitter, DJJazzyJody.
Jody is up to much more nowadays than just keeping Utahns informed about their beloved Jazz. The once 373.3 pounds Jody, has lost 161 pounds and is now going by Jody 2.0 (I made that up earlier…you’re welcome Jody). He joined Droppin Dimes to talk about his life-changing journey.
This podcast is not meant to be a diet infomercial, but rather a platform for someone to share their success and hopefully it will change someone’s life. Going from needing a “more to love seatbelt” (seatbelt extender) on the plane, to being able to enjoy a simple rollercoaster ride with his 4 children and wife at Lagoon, Jody opens up about when and why he made the decision to transform his life.
Is Gordon Hayward staying or leaving? Can the Jazz be the next superstar team? What’s is like covering the Jazz? We end the podcast discussing the NBA with Jody.

The NBA Finals is in full swing and I think it’s safe to say – no one saw this coming – I mean, did you really think the Cleveland Cavaliers would have this tough of a time against the Golden State Warriors?
Ben Dowsett, Deputy Editor, Basketball Insiders, joined Episode seven of Droppin Dimes to discuss just that – how tough it’s been for LeBron James and his guys to stop the Warriors. Ben dropped his take on how the series has played out thus far, how great and effective Kevin Durant looks, the style of play in which the Cavs are most effective against the Warriors and he also gives his prediction on who will win the chip this year
For this episode we also revisited the topic of NBA players “resting” and the amount of back-to-backs these guys have to play. One thing that many fans haven’t factored in is how the arena availability affects all of this. Confused? Listen to the podcast and read Ben’s article.
Jazz fans, we didn’t leave you out. We of course talked about the future of Hayward, George Hill, Boris Diaw and Derrick Favors. W also entertain the idea that the Jazz are on their way to being the next super team.

A familiar face dropped by the show for episode six – Kyle Goon, Sports Writer for the Salt Lake Tribune.
Goon, who covers multiple sports at the University of Utah, brings you up to speed on the baseball, softball and basketball teams. He talks about the baseball team rallying together for their injured teammate DaShawn Keirsey Jr. and coming out with an 11-10 victory over Arizona State, Keirsey’s future after he ran into the outfield wall and collapsed, dislocating and fracturing his left hip, how the Utes softball team has come a long way, and what the future holds for the Runnin’ Utes.
During the show, Goon opens up about what made him want to become a sports writer and how stellar of an athlete he was growing up (just kidding – according to Goon he wasn’t that good at sports growing up). We also discuss the NBA, what it takes to be a good analyst, and parents like Lavar Ball.

Who would have thought three Cali kids, who never knew each other, would move out to Utah and get together for episode five of Droppin Dimes? Well, that’s exactly what happened! David “Koz” Kozlowski, Executive Director and Founder of Quit Trip’n, a non-profit charitable organization, joined Sascha Blume and Brittany Johnson to talk about life after playing football at the University of Utah.
During the podcast, Koz opened up about his personal struggles with life on and off the field, and how he got to where he is today – a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, specializing with teens, young adults, families and suicide prevention.
Through his private practice, non-profit, and podcast — Quit Trip’n Radio Show on ESPN 700 – Koz has “successfully provided relief for teens dealing with unwanted hurt, pain, stress and all kinds of life struggles.” The work that Koz is doing in the community is nothing short of amazing. To get in touch with him, see below.

Who is the best player in the NBA? Should college athletes get paid? Will Gordon Stayward or will he chunk up the deuces? Those are just some of the topics discussed in this week’s episode of Droppin Dimes.
Andy Larsen, Utah Jazz Beat Writer for KSL.Com, joined the show to wrap up the Jazz season and give his perspective on the direction the team will go during the offseason. From the NBA Lottery, free agency and trades, Larsen weighs in on the headlines dominating the Salt Lake Valley right now.
Milos Teodosic—heard of him? This star Serbian point guard could end up in a Jazz uniform next season. Larsen, along with Coach Quin Snyder, have already given their stamps of approval. Why? Read the article by clicking here, and listen to the podcast.
The show wraps up with a series of questions where Larsen has to answer with a yes or no response or one word answer. It’s pretty fun, so check it out!

When it comes to the Utah Jazz, the team has some of the loudest fans in the league. Two of them, Blake Golding and Hector Garcia, joined ‘Droppin Dimes’ to talk—you guess it—Jazz. Brittany met Blake and Hector at Gracie’s in Downtown SLC. She was looking for Jazz fans to interview before they beat the LA Clippers in game four of the first round of the NBA Playoffs, and knew she had to have them on the show.
Some of the things discussed were the key points to the Jazz beating the Golden State Warriors in Western Conference Semifinals, the future of Gordon Hayward, who will win MVP, and so much more.
