We sat down with Joana Moll, co-founder of the Critical Interface Politics Research Group at HANGAR [Barcelona] and co-founder of The Institute for the Advancement of Popular Automatisms.

Her work critically explores the way post-capitalist narratives affect the alphabetization of machines, humans and ecosystems. Her main research topics include Internet materiality, surveillance, social profiling and interfaces.

We sat down with James Bridle who was visiting Ljubljana to give a talk at the Aksioma gallery to talk about the evergrowing problem of technodeterminism and the way future is being predicted by the machines.

What’s the role of humanities in the information society, how do we integrate our future generations and how the myth of the neutral and objective machine came about?

We also talked about Bridle’s investigations of algorithms and the underbelly of Youtube, explored in the article “There is something wrong with the internet”.

James Bridle is an artist and writer working across technologies and disciplines. His artworks have been commissioned by galleries and institutions and exhibited worldwide and on the internet. His writing on literature, culture and networks has appeared in magazines and newspapers including Wired, Domus, Cabinet, the Atlantic, the New Statesman, the Guardian, the Observer and many others, in print and online.

The internet was heralded as a free for all democratic forum where we will come together as a global society and tackle important issues. Instead we got segregated, trapped in various digital prisons which are running 24/7 surveillance on our persons, behaviours and habits. What went wrong and how do we change the way future is bestowed upon us? What can and what must we do as a digital individual, as a group, as a society?

We sat down with an activist Chris Pinchen at the ARNES Mreža znanja conference to talk about the web of distrust, deep-fake videos, the failure of the commons idea and the ways we can all put them back together.

Chris Pinchen is a activist concerned with the levels, and extent, of surveillance in society. Chris is co-founder of the Chokepoint Project, a non-profit organisation that collects, analyses and reports on data relating to network neutrality and civil rights in the digital domain.

Za zaključek koledarskega leta smo se v debati z urednicami Nežo Prah Seničar in Tino Antončič, ki na javnem zavodu RTV skrbita za oddaji Infodrom in Osvežilna fronta, dotaknili vloge medijev pri ustvarjanju državljanov in potrošnikov, odnosu do vsebine in odločanju o relevantnih temah ter pomembnosti platform.

Kako se pogovarjati z mlajšim občinstvom, zakaj ga nima smisla podcenjevati in kako se uporabniki spreminjajo ter hkrati vendarle ostajajo isti. Kaj zanima mlade, na kakšen način se je z njimi potrebno pogovarjati o družbeno relevantnih temah in kdo temu nasprotuje?

Da se o medijski pismenosti spet resno pogovarjamo po skoraj dvajsetih letih ni naključje. A če smo pri prvi iteraciji medijsko pismenost potrebovali zaradi prehoda v demokratični samoregulacijski model, se danes o njej pogovarjamo prav zaradi izrojenosti medijske krajine, ki tolerira vse preveč anomalij, vse skupaj zvede na vprašanje kapitala in od uporabnika zahteva skoraj nemogoče stvari.

Dr. Sandra Bašić Hrvatin je ena od vodilnih slovenskih strokovnjakinj s področja medijske teorije in zakonodaje. Sodelovala je pri pripravi medijske zakonodaje, regulacijskih kodeksov in razprav o medijski krajini v Sloveniji.

Geert Lovink is a Dutch media theorist, internet critic and author of Uncanny Networks (2002), Dark Fiber (2002), My First Recession (2003), Zero Comments (2007), Networks Without a Cause (2012) and Social Media Abyss (2016). Since 2004 he is researcher in the Faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industries at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) where he is the founder of the Institute of Network Cultures (www.networkcultures.org).

His centre organized conferences, publications and research networks such as Video Vortex (the politics and aesthetics of online video), Unlike Us (alternatives in social media), Critical Point of View (Wikipedia), Society of the Query (the culture of search), MoneyLab (internet-based revenue models in the arts) and a project on the future of art criticism. From 2004-2013 he was also associate prof. at Mediastudies (new media), University of Amsterdam. Since 2009 he is professor at the European Graduate School.
