For more than two centuries, something has been reported beneath the surface of Lake Utopia in New Brunswick.
Described as long, dark, and moving with a strange, undulating motion, the sightings stretch back to early accounts from Indigenous communities and settlers in the late 1800s. Over time, the story persisted—reappearing in waves throughout the twentieth century, with notable clusters of sightings in 1969, 1982, and 1996.
Witnesses described something that didn’t quite behave like any known animal. Something that moved with intention. Something that seemed to vanish just as quickly as it appeared.
Theories have ranged from oversized eels to undiscovered species… to something shaped more by perception than reality.
But despite generations of sightings, no physical evidence has ever been found.
And in recent years, the reports have grown quiet.
In this episode of Down the Crooked Path, we explore the legend of the Lake Utopia creature—a story suspended between folklore and possibility, where the water holds its secrets… and whatever once moved beneath the surface may still be there.
