Knowing Dublin – Know Your City Council is a simple introduction to the work of Dublin City Council and the role of the elected representatives in the life of the city. It is a nuts and bolts piece, told in plain language, designed to inform those with little or no knowledge of the many services that the Council provides. As such, it is relevant for young adults, new citizens, immigrants, and anyone who wants to know more about how Dublin City functions. It is also a useful tool for teachers as a basis for class lessons.

The guide describes in detail the work of the local government elected representatives. There is a strong emphasis on voting: how to vote and why it is so important that citizens use their vote.

Listen back to local Historian and well-known author Bernard Neary from Cabra West as he brings us on an interesting tour of Dublin 7, including the people, places and buildings of interest. Find out where the writer Iris Murdoch was born, where the poet Austin Clarke grew up and where Matt Kiernan made his Uilleann Pipes. Discover interesting facts about local landmarks including the Royal Canal, Broadstone Railway Station and The Four Courts. Reminisce about skipping and conkers games played by children and the picturehouses that dotted the area.

This talk by Peter Clarke covers 225 years of the Royal Canal's history, from its origins in 1789 through all its phases to the present day. The talk traces the planning and construction of the canal and references many places, people and events of historical interest along the course of Dublin’s beloved Royal Canal.

Peter Costello is an author and editor, described by the American critic Robert Hogan in the Greenwood Dictionary of Irish Literature as “a contemporary embodiment” of the “tradition in Irish literature of the independent scholar, who has an erudition embarrassing to the professional academic”. He is one of Ireland’s leading Joyceans and has written, edited or contributed to some thirty-seven books and his interests are wide-ranging – from Irish cultural, political and business histories to research on the Piltdown Man hoax and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He has published a book on Dublin Churches, and a new edition, with an introduction, of Chesterton's Christendom in Dublin, on the Eucharistic Congress of 1932.

Elizabeth Smith is an authority on Belgrave Square in Rathmines and she has spoken on this topic to many local history societies in Dublin. She also completed a Certificate in Local History at Dublin City Library & Archive when she was the inaugural winner of the Lord Mayor’s Prize for best dissertation. She is founder of the Local History Alumni Group, also at DCLA, and this has gone from strength to strength.

Dr Jacinta Prunty is Head of the History Department at Maynooth University. She has written extensively on the Dublin Slums and her book of that title is a work which has been welcomed by geographers and historians alike. It gives a comprehensive and insightful account and analysis of Dublin’s inexorable transformation into a slum city; it provides a template for researchers in Irish urban history; and it awakens social historians to what they have to learn from the historical geographers.

This talk by Turlough O’Donnell marked the 800th anniversary of the connections between Dublin and the Camino de Santiago which was celebrated in 2016.

Turlough O’Donnell is chair of the Camino Society Ireland CLG and has walked many parts of the Camino.

In 1922-23, over 200 people were killed and 3,500 imprisoned in Dublin as rival pro and anti-Treaty factions of the nationalist movement came to blows. John Dorney will talk about urban guerrilla warfare, prisons, executions and assassination during this tumultuous period.
