This passage is when the Israelites were finally going into the Promised Land - they faced many obstacles: giants, huge fortresses, a flooded river - how were they to go in?
God’s heart is that each one of us is able to enter fully into all that God has for us - but we also face many challenges in life - some that, like the giants and fortresses, seem too big for us.
The Israelites were to carefully follow the presence of God, carried by the priest - “because they had never been this way before” (Vs 4) As we grow and mature in our Christian walk - we are always traveling a pathway that is new for us - different than what we have done in the past - how do we stay on the right path?
The first step is to consecrate ourselves again to the Lord - there are two parts to this - separating ourselves from the past, disentangling ourselves from those things from our past that drag us back - and then - attaching ourselves more firmly to the Lord. As we “consecrate ourselves” again to the Lord, we set ourselves up for what God will do in and through us as the “giants” and “fortresses” are defeated. The precursor of the miracle, the victory - is the consecration.
Consecration is also important as it keeps God close and nurtures our relationship with Him.
Then we follow the Lord - follow His Presence - into the place where there are giants and fortresses and flooded rivers. As we do this - in obedience - God will be with us on the pathway - as the priests stepped into the river - the waters parted. This took obedience, faith that the presence of God was really all they needed - and courage. People that grow up in the desert never learn to swim - it took great courage to walk into the flooded Jordan river, trusting that as they obeyed and trusted God - God would deal with the “obstacle” in front of them
So consecration, obedience, trust or faith in God and courage produced the victory they needed. As they trusted that God would lead them and be with them as they followed Him - they walked into their “Promised Land”. And this pattern is what brought victory with the other “giants” and “fortresses” in front of the people.
It is the same with us - as we consecrate ourselves to God again - obey what He is telling us to do - trust Him and His love for us - with courage - we will experience the rivers parting, the giants falling, the fortresses tumbling.
Walking the “Jesus way” - the new pathway God has for us - we will face challenges - we will need God to bring victories - but trusting Him and walking in obedience with courage is how we will begin to enter into all the God has for us.
The process described above is what the christian life is all about and also what missions is all about.
