Dunker Punks Podcast – Arlington Church of the Brethren

How do you find the power in your vulnerability? Mwarianesu Makufa, the Youth and Young Adult Peace Formation Organizer at On Earth Peace and the host of the bi-weekly Storyscape Spoken Word Salon, speaks to us this week through some of his spoken word poetry and shares his hope for words to spread the ideas of light to the world.

Anna Lisa Gross is back on the podcast representing the Womaen’s Caucus in this episode by interviewing Melisa Leiter-Grandison and Ruthann Knechel Johansen about how they perceive and relate to leadership in the church. These interviews offer us an insight to where over half a century of feminism in the Church of the Brethren has moved the inclusivity needle and begs the question whether women are better off today than decades past. The guiding question of the interviews is “when did you know that you are a leader in the church?” you can listen to more of these conversations in DPP episodes:

127: Lauren Seganos Cohen, Carol Lindquist

118: Susan Boyer, Tabitha Rudy, Kathryn LaPointe, Rebekah Flores

113: Ben Bear, Carla Gillespie

107: Sally Rich, Dana Cassell, Audri Svay

In this episode Josiah Ludwick returns with a great interview with Dr. Brian Smith and Rachel Johnson talking about each of their experiences with the “Thriving Together: Congregations for Racial Justice” program from Messiah University. As you listen, think about how your congregation has addressed racial divisions in your community and what the church can do to de-segregate Sunday mornings.

In a society that glorifies violent conflict resolution with a federal government that criminalizes practicing conscientious objection to war, how do believers in peacebuilding and members of historic peace churches oppose the Selective Service System in modern day America? Listen as Tori Bateman interviews Maria Santelli and Bill Galvin from the Center on Conscience and War about how we got to this point and what we can do to live out our peace witness.

In a continuation of our series of interviews with folks in ministry about their hope for the future, this episode takes a deep dive into college campus ministry. Jessie Houff interviews the campus minister of Bridgewater College for over 30 years, Robbie Miller, about his experience and perspective on ministry and church community and guidance he offers young people at this formative time of life.

Why do you “stick with” the church institution? In this follow-up episode to Episode #111, we invite you to ponder this question as we reconnect with Gabriel Padilla and hear an update about some of the struggles in his spiritual journey and relationships with and within the Church of the Brethren.

Welcome to a new season of the podcast! We kick things off with a deep dive on the relationship between the Church and mental health. Mycal Gresh brings us her reflections on the intersection of science, healthcare, and faith and ways to continue progressing to help our communities.

What makes you hopeful for the “big C” Church in such a time as this? In our summer season finale, Mark Dowdy – known double preacher’s kid (PK) – interviews his parents, Dale and Christy Dowdy, on their paths to and lives in ministry and what their perspectives are on what it means to be Christian today. This is the first in an upcoming series of episodes that will feature folks concluding ministries to hear their hopes for the future!
