The Storm That Never Happened: MIT's AI Models Disasters It Has Never Seen - August 27, 2026
A new MIT algorithm published in Nature Communications generates plausible, unprecedented extreme events without ever seeing one in its training data. Trained on just six months of ordinary US precipitation, it produced three hundred millimeter rainfall maps for a city whose record is two hundred. Chris and Laura dig into how it works, why it is not a hallucination, and how it squares with new research showing AI weather models still lose to physics when records break.

The Watermark That Knows Who Made It: Microsoft's Hidden ID Inside AI Images
A researcher reverse engineered Microsoft Paint and found that every image its AI generates carries an invisible, server issued identifier stamped into roughly three quarters of the pixels. Chris and Laura unpack how the mark works, why "runs locally" no longer means offline, and exactly where content provenance stops being transparency and starts being tracking.

Nine Hundred Million for a Robot That Hasn't Shipped: Inside Physical AI's Capital Moment - August 25, 2026
XPeng's robotics unit just raised over $900 million at a $6.3 billion valuation, the largest single-round private financing in China's embodied AI industry, for a humanoid robot that won't reach paying customers until next year. Meanwhile, a Chinese robot outran Usain Bolt's 100m world record in Beijing and then collapsed and had to be carried off on a stretcher. We dig into the widening gap between humanoid spectacle and actual shipped units, and why the scarce resource turns out to be boring industrial manufacturing capability rather than better models.
