Welcome to a special episode of Why Watch That; this is all about reviews! Since we’ve been away for a couple of weeks in preparation for the future of Why Watch That, in this episode, we wanted to put together our reviews of recently released and soon-to-be released movies. Our first review is of “Arrival,” which opened last week and stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker. The other three films that are reviewed in this episode all release this week. They are: “Bleed For This,” which stars Miles Teller, Aaron Eckhart, Ciaran Hinds, and Katey Sagal; “Nocturnal Animals,” which is directed by Tom Ford and also stars Amy Adams, along with Jake Gyllenhaal and a great supporting cast, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Shannon, Armie Hammer, Isla Fisher, Michael Sheen, and Laura Linney; and “Manchester by the Sea,” which stars Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Lucas Hedges, and Kyle Chandler. By the way, at whywatchthat.com, we have even more recent reviews, including reviews of “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Loving,” and “Elle.” Enjoy!
In this episode, the Critic and the Referee take a step back from movie review after movie review to focus on ... "The Walking Dead"! Well, not just that, of course. Our dynamic duo talks about both new and returning TV shows. They also take a pause to reflect on the state of this year's fall film releases. Are these films delivering the goods so far? Listen to find out! Plus, there's a "Did You Know" about one of the most singular actors around and a "Pick of the Week" that will help you get your Netflix binge on. Enjoy!

Wow, listeners! Since there’s so much going on in the world of Film/TV, the Critic and the Referee have a lot to discuss (and keep up with). In this episode, they give you their takes on what they’ve seen, so far, at the New York Film Festival. (The festival’s public screenings begin Friday, September 30.) They also give you the highlights from the Urbanworld Film Festival, which just ended. But that’s not all. Two major films are in wide release Friday, so they just had to review them. The first film review is of “Deepwater Horizon,” which stars Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, and Kate Hudson. The second is of “Queen of Katwe,” which screened at Urbanworld and stars Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo. (“Queen of Katwe” is already in limited release in selected cities.) But, even that isn’t all. What about Fall TV? New TV shows get the Why Watch That treatment. Plus, of course, there are a “Did You Know?” and a “Pick of the Week” that you don’t want to miss. Dig in!

Well, well, well, listeners! The Critic and the Referee recorded their instant reaction to this Sunday’s Emmys ceremony! What do they think about the winners and the losers? You know you’ll find out when you listen! Plus, they have two intriguing reviews for you! The first review is of “The Dressmaker,” a peculiar film that stars Kate Winslet. (By the way, our interview with director Jocelyn Moorhouse is available on our site. Check it out!) The second review is of the highly anticipated “The Magnificent Seven,” which, of course, stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and more … in a western! Take a listen!

Listeners, we have an extra special treat for you! In this episode, the Critic and the Referee are joined by a very special guest: actor-writer-director Lawrence Saint-Victor! Lawrence first came to our attention as Remy Boudreau in “Guiding Light.” He also starred in “The Bold and the Beautiful” as Carter Walton, and he even made an entertaining appearance in “Ugly Betty,” among others. To celebrate some recent TV shows we love, Lawrence joins us to discuss some of our favorites. In addition, the Critic and the Referee review “The Vessel,” which stars Martin Sheen, and “Operation Avalanche,” which reimagines what happened at NASA and the CIA during the Cold War. Both films release this Friday. This is a good one!
