The Lord was personally concerned over Smyrna’s tribulation, and He made special care to encourage them through their trials. The promises of Jesus which awaited them on the other side of their trouble far outweighed their present, temporal affliction.

The Christians at Smyrna were persecuted early on by the Romans for their refusal to worship the emperor; the Jewish community was often enraged by the church’s message of Jesus. Many suffered poverty, imprisonment, and even martyrdom.

Smyrna was a beautiful and prosperous city in the first century. Yet the church of Smyrna had been stripped of all their material wealth—and still they were deemed rich.
