There’s an idea I’ve come back to time and time again, and it continues to shape how I understand people, relationships, and communication.
The Map's Not The Territory.
In this episode, I explore what that really means, and why it matters more than most people realise.
Because the truth is, we don’t experience life as it is. We experience it through our own interpretation of it. Our own internal map, shaped by our experiences, our beliefs, our emotions, and the meaning we’ve given to moments over time.
And the challenge is… we often assume others see the world the same way we do.
They don’t.
And that’s where so many misunderstandings begin.
I unpack how this principle shows up in everyday conversations, why we can communicate clearly and still be misunderstood, and how something as simple as a single word can carry completely different meanings depending on the person hearing it.
We also look at a more effective way to approach relationships. Moving beyond “treat others as you’d like to be treated” and into something deeper. Learning how to treat others as they want to be treated, by first understanding the world from their perspective.
I introduce the four core behavioural patterns that influence how people think, decide, and communicate, not as labels, but as a starting point for awareness.
Because when you begin to understand someone’s map, something shifts.
Communication becomes clearer.
Connection becomes easier.
And influence becomes more natural.
This is not just a concept.
It’s a living principle that’s playing out in every interaction you have, whether you’re aware of it or not.
So as you listen, just reflect on this:
Where in your life might you be mistaking your map for the territory?
And what might change if you became just a little more curious about someone else’s?
