This episode is the precursor to next week's episode on boundaries and is a short session on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. I personally love this model because it makes so much sense to what we crave and desire in life from a motivation perspective. When we recognise our own needs, we can then identify if they’re being met or not and this will allow us to get more specific on our boundaries, as well as our drivers in life at certain points (because life is not linear).
Our basic needs such as physiological, through to safety and security, and love and belonging are essential to creating a healthy person. We need these building blocks to become the best version of ourselves and we start with these needs from the moment we’re conceived! Then further beyond this we look to fine tune our persona, our offer, our purpose, our legacy through esteem and actualisation. Only then can we truly operate from a place of mastery and transcendence.
I’ll talk you through the original 5 levels and then the 3 later additions and explain the split between the deficiency needs (d-needs) and the being/growth needs (b-needs) and why there is a clearly defined split. Having our needs met throughout life equates to a well rounded and healthy human with the ability to absolutely flex our balance, brilliance and resilience as we need to. But if these needs are not met at any time through the curve balls of life, or situations we slowly end up in, then we can be right back at the base; gasping for air and looking for shelter.
To know this is to understand the tapestry of life, and why it’s essential we build our balance, brilliance and resilience as we go.
