Explore the revolutionary FAA MOSAIC Rule (Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification), which officially arrived on July 22 at Oshkosh after being signed on July 18, 2025. This landmark update is designed to make flying more accessible and enjoyable for pilots and aircraft enthusiasts by expanding the possibilities in light-sport aviation
Dive into how MOSAIC removes old rigid weight caps like 1,320 pounds for landplanes, replacing them with performance-based stall speed criteria (e.g., 59 knots clean for sport pilot operations and up to 61 knots with flaps down for airplanes)
. Discover how sport pilots can now access 70-75% of the general aviation fleet, including four-seat aircraft like the Piper Cherokee and Cessna 182 (though limited to one passenger for sport operations). Learn about expanded pilot privileges, including night flying endorsements (requiring BasicMed or a standard medical certificate), and how instructors with sport ratings can now be compensated for training
Understand the eased medical requirements for daytime operations (only a valid driver’s license is required, assuming no prior denial) and the BasicMed pathway for night flights (requiring a post-2006 medical, online course every two years, and physical exam every four years)
. We'll also cover the significant boost to innovation, allowing for faster speeds (up to 250 knots), complex features like retractable gear and electric engines, and fostering the development of eVTOL aircraft with simplified controls. The rule also updates maintenance procedures, renaming and expanding the repairman certificate with performance-based training and no citizenship requirement
This episode breaks down how the MOSAIC Rule prioritizes safety through mandatory manufacturer safety programs and additional training for complex operations, building on the strong safety record of light-sport aircraft compared to experimentals
. Find out how it will transform flight schools, allowing four-seat planes for instructor-student flights, making training more affordable and accessible, and potentially counter pilot shortages by attracting new enthusiasts. Simulators also get 2.5 hours of training credit. Join us to understand how this rule is truly democratizing the skies for a new era of aviation

Experiencing an oil leak under your airplane, especially around the turbocharger? Many pilots and mechanics might immediately suspect a faulty turbo, but as aviation expert Bill from Atlantic Beachcraft reveals, it's rarely the turbo seals that are the problem! This episode dives deep into common aircraft oil leaks, specifically those often misdiagnosed as turbo issues. Learn how to identify if your oil leak is coming from a check valve (which is usually the culprit and much cheaper to fix, often the inlet valve)
rather than the turbo itself.
We walk you through the diagnostic process of removing and bagging check valves to pinpoint the exact source of the leak
, which can save you from unnecessary and expensive turbo replacements, with one check valve costing around $300 compared to a $1,500 turbo. Discover the vital role of labyrinth seals in turbochargers, designed to use air pressure to prevent oil leaks, and understand why even a new turbo might initially drip until the oil "cokes" on the seal
Plus, gain insights into other engine oil leak sources like the breather and what a lack of oil vapor signifies about your engine's compression and rings
. Get expert tips on aircraft maintenance, pre-oiling procedures (and when they're not needed), and how to conduct post-repair leak checks. Tune in to have an intelligent conversation with your mechanic and keep your aircraft in impeccable condition!

Uncover the hidden dangers of spatial disorientation in aviation, a leading cause of fatal crashes in general aviation, accounting for 5 to 10 percent of GA accidents with 90 percent of these resulting in fatalities. This episode delves into why pilots lose their sense of aircraft attitude, altitude, and airspeed relative to the Earth, even with modern instruments. Learn about the physiological causes, from the vestibular system's misinterpretations to somatogravic illusions (like experiencing acceleration as climbing) and somatogyral illusions such as The Leans, the illusion of turning in the opposite direction, and Coriolis
We'll explain the infamous '178-second rule' which warns that non-instrument-rated pilots entering Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) survive an average of just 178 seconds before losing control
. Discover how factors like night flights over dark terrain, fatigue, illness, rapid climbs, and low flight time amplify these risks, especially during VFR into IMC transitions—the deadliest trap
Crucially, we discuss essential prevention strategies and recovery techniques, emphasizing the absolute necessity of always scanning, reading, and following serviceable flight and navigation instruments, and trusting your instruments over your bodily sensations
. Learn about the vital role of mandatory instrument training, recurrent practice including "hood time" and simulators, and the game-changing potential of synthetic vision technology in providing crucial visual references in low visibility. Stay oriented, stay alive – your life depends on understanding and mitigating this critical aviation challenge
