In this initial conversation with author and podcaster John Atak, we explore the complex nature of cult-like organizations, referencing his almost 40 years of research and experience alongside my experience in Landmark, a group rooted in Werner Erhard’s controversial teachings. We discussed how intense devotion to a charismatic leader OR ideology can subtly transform into devotion to an organization and “the work,” masking manipulation, abuse, and trauma under the guise of self-improvement and personal responsibility.

Together, they examine broader questions about why society tolerates exploitation in such settings, the parallels between groups like Landmark and Scientology, and the urgent need to rethink what ethical, evidence-based, and truly beneficial personal development could look like.
