E6. Realize You are Not Alone: Shared vulnerability amongst teachers, students, and beyond, w/ educator, activist, and podcast host Wali White

Listen Later

Ever Forward Club’s Ashanti Branch is joined by educator, activist, and podcast host Wali White. Wali previously hosted Ashanti on The 730 Podcast. Check out the bottom of the notes to be linked to Wali’s podcast.

As a New York City school teacher, Wali, like Ashanti, has witnessed first hand the power of shared vulnerability to create life changing relationships.

(3:28) Ashanti introduces the podcast.

(6:13) Wali shares his background as a podcaster, basketball coach, school teacher, and activist fighting to end capital punishment in our justice system.

(11:11) We learn why Wali created his podcast - to help men carve out vulnerable spaces for themselves, in order to find parallels with each other and validate experiences that were once kept inside.

(14:34) The men share the front of their masks.

(16:32) Through personal experiences with sexual abuse, the men share how hearing others’ stories can cause a chain reaction of moments and realizations, opening up the floodgates that allow one to transition from fear of being broken to relief that they are not alone.

(20:32) Through both of their experiences as educators, Ashanti and Wali reflect on how many children are suffering in silence, and how the state infrastructure and its faults hangs above all as a barrier to how we deal with trauma, and how we connect with students.

(29:27) The men share the back of their masks. Wali focuses on his insecurity and need for affirmation. Ashanti talks about his fear of failure.

(35:30) Wali and Ashanti reflect generally on the importance of their work: how “when you reveal, you heal”, and how Ashanti’s mask workshop is a form of “counseling” without the societal stigma.

(39:48) Wali shares more details about The 730 Podcast, drops some final advice to the listeners, and shares his fight to end capital punishment and provide justice for Keith Lamar.

(47:55) Wali shares more about Keith Lamar.
