In this episode of the Fire In The Belly Podcast, we listen to Award-winning actress and Body Positivity Coach Kate Huffman debunk the unrealistic standards on beauty and fitness. Kate shares her own experience with anorexia and depression which were caused by fat-shaming when she was young. Today, she wants everyone, especially women, to know that your body appearance does not dictate your self-worth! Learn more about body positivity when you listen in now.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Some people think they can determine the state of one’s health based on appearance alone. You can’t. Stop fat-shaming (and fit shaming) other people just because their bodies do not conform to your preference. We must always interact and live our lives with compassion.
  • As parents and/or shapers of young minds, we must be wary of what we tell our children when it comes to physical appearance. Teach body neutrality instead. There is no right body type.
  • When we let other people’s, judgments influence us, we tend to degrade ourselves. Our mental health suffers—we feel shame, anxiety, and loneliness which may lead to depression and/or eating disorders. Just know that there are various body types, and ALL of them have a place in this society. No one should feel excluded.
  • It’s funny how women’s value is anchored to physical appearance. The beauty industry mostly offers products that cater to society norms—for example, products for straightening curly hair, tanning or whitening, and slimming.  It’s as if life can only progress if we follow such preposterous rules.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “I had to have those all of that experience to be able to take the message to others.”
  • “You get so much accolade in this world when you lose weight.”
  • “I wouldn’t allow anything to be responsible for me and my choices other than me.”
  • “People fat shame publicly, constantly with no apology, no punches fold, and don’t stop for a second and think that it’s bullying that they’re doing.”
