In this episode we have a round table discussion on free speech and its potential limitations. I invite four guests on to further hone my understanding of the topic and to flush out any areas of lacking in my understanding. This is a shorter episode and just a taste of more to come in season 3 where I will tackle free speech head on in greater detail.

In this episode I review the El Paso Shooter’s manifesto and thoroughly fact check his claims. I also construct logical arguments from his perspective to see if they stand up to scrutiny. I’m doing all this in order to give you further insight into critical thinking. It won’t be too surprising for you to learn that he made many mistakes in his research and beliefs and that his reasoning was terribly flawed. The exercise of going through his claims was beneficial in further developing logically reasoning and critical thinking skills and after this episode you will have learned more tools to assist you in your quest for knowledge and understanding. My goal is that you won’t be fooled as easily as he.

In this episode I go over the El Paso Shooter’s manifesto in detail in order to understand the shooter’s worldview and as an exercise in critical thought. How are we to know if he was correct in his claims or incorrect? Did he lose his mind to a deranged conspiracy theory? Did he make any valid points that we need to recognize and consider? All the questions of why someone would do this and how they were able to come to his conclusions will be asked, challenged and answered in this 2 part series. In this first episode I will just state his claims without providing too much analysis in an attempt to steel man his position so that we can fully understand his perspective. In the second episode of this series I will take his claims head on to assess their validity and help guild you through an honest and critical examination of the soundness of his reasoning. This is the first in a longer series I am planning where we take a deep dive into critical thought; specifically how to read critically. My hope is to provide insight into how someone like the El Paso Shooter can be created through poor critical thinking skills, a willingness to self indoctrinate into conspiracy theories and a misinformed understanding of science. My technique can be duplicated by you so that you won’t be fooled by his claims and so that you can further hone your critical thinking skills.

In this episode we discuss the use of performance enhancing drugs in sports. We cover some history of use, the current situation within sporting leagues, our preferences, the mathematics that explains why people use drugs and our solutions to the problems. Additionally we cover the moral dilemmas we find ourselves in when attempting to solve this issue and the correct path through the moral and ethical debate.

In this episode we discuss S. Craig Zahler’s film Brawl in Cell Block 99. We do a full rundown of the plot and some of our favorite moments in the film. Originally I planned to publish two more episodes reviewing his other films Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich and his epic masterpiece Bone Tomahawk, but the audio was poor quality and unsalvageable. In this episode the Midwest Misanthrope and I discuss Ayn Rand’s book, “The Fountainhead.” MM gives a brief description of the plot while I focus mostly on the ethical, moral and philosophical elements of the book. In the end it should be pretty clear that Ayn Rand’s philosophy and morality and hugely lacking in substance and soundness.
