Last week, Antler US portfolio company Cedar announced that it closed a $3 million seed round led by Caffeinated Capital, with participation from Tishman Speyer Ventures and a number of prominent individual investors (full Forbes feature here). 

Cedar is building an operating system for urban development. As an early investor, Antler worked with Kyle, Rahul, and Nate as they experimented and fought to crack open a wedge into this market. The Cedar team is ambitious and tenacious; we are honored to partner with them on this journey as they build the future of urban infill development starting in our own backyard of Austin, TX. We're honored to feature the first founder Antler US ever invested in - Manuel Schönfeld, founder & CEO of PowerX - on this episode of Early Days.  Today, PowerX builds hardware-enabled AI sensors that reduce energy waste. PowerX has installed thousands of hardware devices that save energy, water, and carbon emissions in over 25 countries, and is serving some of the world’s leading brands including McDonalds and Comcast. 

But when Manu joined our inaugural New York City Residency in late 2019, he had recently left McKinsey (where he'd advised governments and private sector on innovative energy solutions) and was just starting to explore different ways he could innovate in the hydrogen economy. (He actually built a hydrogen-powered scooter over the course of the Residency.) 

Manu describes the process (and pain points) of parlaying his research into building product for actual customers, how he navigated PowerX through the 2020-2021 supply chain crisis, and his approach to VC fundraising.  Manu's personal background and his story of building PowerX are both remarkable; this episode provides equal parts inspiration and concrete advice for founders determined to solve the world's most pressing challenges.

Swish Goswami is the co-founder and CEO of Surf, a startup that helps consumers monetize their digital footprints through the world’s first extension that passively rewards people for everyday browsing. Arthur Leopold recognized the potential of selfies becoming the new autographs. He quickly joined Cameo as the first employee (COO) and invested in the startup's friends and family round. Arthur spent over 5.5 years with Cameo, serving as President through January 2023. While Arthur recently stepped down as President to start his own company, he remains a Senior Advisor and an ardent supporter of the team.

After 10 years of being a club promoter in New York, Scott Harrison declared moral bankruptcy, and bought a one way ticket to Liberia to serve others.  While in Liberia Scott was faced with the startling reality of clean water access in the developing world.  Seeing how big of a problem this was, Scott decided to dedicate his life to solving it.

He flew back to New York, threw a big birthday party, invited all of his friends and raised money to build his first well.  On that day Charity Water was born.

16 years later and Charity Water has raised hundreds of millions of dollars to build thousands of wells around the world, slowly but surely given people access to life changing clean water.

Did you know that nearly 45 MILLION Americans don't have a credit score, and most are immigrant families that struggle with lack of access to basic financial services because of this.

Meet Samir Goel, the son of two immigrant parents that grew up watching his parents struggle as they tried to get access to services most of us take for granted, like mortgages to buy a home, and financing for a car.

Samir took this early lesson, combined it with an absolutely relentless optimism and work ethic and built Esusu.  Esusu is a platform that lets landlords report tenants rental payment to credit agencies, helping those who need it most get access to one of the most important numbers in American life — a credit score.

In 2022 Esusu broke the Unicorn barrier with a Series B led by Softbank.
