  • Dread Media - Episode 401
This week is for the ladies. Virgins and whores, final girls and damsels in distress. Monsters and monster-hunters. Seductresses and victims. Everything in between. The female of the species is not often serviced well by the genre, but this week we present reviews of eight films of varying quality that are centered around women. First, Chris joins Desmond to discuss the intense and powerful Martha Marcy May Marlene starring the amazing Elizabeth Olsen. Devil Dinosaur Jr. sidles up to chat up Girls Against Boys. Desmond goes solo on a variety of films: Avenged, Rabid Grannies, Echoes, and two films from Troma's From Asia with Lust Volume 1 DVD: Hitch-Hike and Camp. Finally, ending on a bang, Duane joins Desmond for a look at All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. There's tunes as well: "Floor" by Royal Thunder, "Marcy's Song" by John Hawkes, "Learned It" by Girls Against Boys, "Blood Sisters" by Huntress, "Dark Secret Girl" by Turbonegro, and "She Rides" by Danzig. • Hey, an Actor: Heath Ledger
This month's Hey, an Actor! profiles the short-lived career of one this generation's most promising actors: Heath Ledger. The coverage takes Ian and Pandy through his first Oscar-nominated role in Brokeback Mountain, an early supporting role in The Patriot, and his first starring role in A Knight's Tale. Along the way there are puerile references to male nudity, Pandy revealing some important personal news as an afterthought, and the most profound disagreement to date between The Brothers Wilson in relation to the definition of a sports movie stretching to include all war films. Furthermore, the jingles are relaxed this month to focus upon paying tribute to fellow Earth-2.net podcast For Better or Worse, in a somewhat playful way.

  • Dread Media - Episode 400
Dread Media hits the big 4-0-0! For 400 weeks in a row we have provided you an hour (or so) of audio entertainment covering the horror and dark fantastique across all media, and this week is no different. In fact, all the way back in episode 100 we paid tribute to the man of many media himself: Clive Barker. Since then, a lot has happened in the world of Clive Barker, and Desmond and friends are here to fill you in on the world of film, literature, and comics as they relate to Clive Barker. First, Desmond and Darryll get a look at the long-anticipated Nightbreed: The Director's Cut, a film once considered lost forever. Then, Devil Dinosaur Jr. delivers an epic-length Stay Scary based on the writing work that Clive Barker has done for television, namely: "Haeckel's Tale" and "Valerie on the Stairs" from Masters of Horror, and "The Yattering and Jack" from Tales from the Darkside. Desmond goes solo for the first of two segments on a review of the brand new (yet old) novelette Tortured Souls: The Legend of Primordium. He comes back after a break to discuss the sacrilegious original series form Boom! Studios: Next Testament. Finally, Darryll returns to take look at Lord of Illusions: The Director's Cut. On top of that, it wouldn't be an episode of Dread Media without some thematic tunes: "Transdermal Celebration" by Ween, "Skin" by Oingo Boingo, "Cold Ethyl" by Alice Cooper, "Mr. Torture" by Helloween, "Newborn God (Radiance-Vehemence)" by FEASTofFETUS, "Magic Moments" by Erasure, and "Born to Murder the World" by Simon Boswell. • Twice as Bright, Half as Long - Episode 05.04
Ian and Dave cover three more episodes of Street Hawk. In "The Unsinkable 453," Jessie and Norman investigate when a mercenary escapes from a prison transport and attempts to get his hands on a large amount of money hidden on a ship that's about to be sunk. In "Hot Target," Norman reconnects with an old flame when Street Hawk is assigned to stop the illegal sale of laser weapons. And in "Murder is a Novel Idea," a writer finds herself targeted when she announces she is going to publish a book that will reveal the killer in a long-standing murder case. They also discuss the writers' lack of understanding of the publishing industry, learn more from the Rex Smith Acting Masterclass, and come up with a couple of potential spin-off shows. One of which features a crime-fighting moustache.
