Welcome to another bonus episode of Earth Care! In this episode, we chat with Eric Howk, the lead guitarist in Portugal. The Man! In the music video for Feel It Still, which has surpassed 1 billion streams, the band included several Easter eggs that pointed fans to causes they care about. These included causes helping with human rights, access to clean water, social justice, racial justice and environmental justice. Being from Alaska, they also have a unique perspective on climate change because they see its effects faster than those of us in a four-seasons climate. In this clip, Eric details what climate change is doing to where he grew up and shared advice for any climate change doubters.

Jack, The Kid Conservationist, is an 11-year-old animal rights activist, public speaker and published author! After learning that the demand for palm oil was endangering the home of Jack’s favourite animal, the orangutan, Jack took action. He now shares fun and educational videos that teach us about the rainforest, orangutan population, species conservation and more! Through his activism, he has helped raise $6000 for orangutan rehabilitation. With every purchase of his book “Kawan the Orangutan,” a tree is planted in the rainforest.

Jack joins Earth Care to teach us about orangutans, explain what palm oil has to do with deforestation, and provide ways that we can help. Plus, Jack talks about becoming a published author!

Arlene Slocombe is the Executive Director of the Wellington Water Watchers, soon to be the Water Watchers. The organization was founded in 2007 and is based out of Wellington County, Ontario. Their work is dedicated to protecting, restoring and conserving drinking water in the province. They also guide grassroots movements in their mission to preserve safe water. Arlene has been with the Wellington Water Watchers since its founding. She joins Earth Care to talk about the various threats to our safe drinking water and what we can to do help protect it.

Dr. Hind A. Al-Abadleh is a University Research Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Wilfred Laurier University. She's also an award-winning researcher! Dr. Hind Al-Abadleh's most recent recognition was the inaugural Gilead Award for Excellence in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion from the Canadian Society for Chemistry. Her research looks at the unanswered questions around air quality, atmospheric chemistry and geochemistry. Her work teaches us the chemistry found in atmospheric aerosols and soil. Dr. Hind Al-Abadleh joins Earth Care to explain what an aerosol is, what human-caused aerosols are, and their effect on climate change.

In between being an artist, Alyssa Reid got into gardening. She's helping us celebrate Earth Day by sharing some advice for a beginner gardener. Jacquie Hutchings is the co-founder of the reusable takeout container program,  Friendlier. Chemical Engineers Jacquie and Kayli wanted to contribute to mitigating climate risk. The two friends launched Friendlier and are helping restaurants around South Western Ontario reduce their packaging waste through their reusable takeout operation. Jacquie joins Earth Care to share how a reusable takeout container program works, and the amount of trash generated from food packaging. Plus, she explains how we can encourage our favourite restaurants to switch to a reusable takeout container program.

Music Declares Emergency is a global collaboration of music industry professionals responding to our climate emergency. In 2021, the volunteer-run organization launched a Canadian chapter with the help of Kim Fry, who is no stranger to the climate justice movement. Kim Fry has previously worked for Greenpeace and organized groups for climate justice rallies. Kim joins Earth Care to talk about Music Declares Emergency's work to build a greener future, the role artists play in the fight against climate change, and how music industry professionals can get involved.
