Earth day 22
52 years ago, a junior senator from Wisconsin saw an oil spill
Standing on the shores of Santa Barbara watching oil covered birds
Flew home thinking there’s a job to do and I won’t rest until
We find a way to fix the problem, we need action more than words
He stood up tall and said “There’s no issue more critical to mankind
than the quality of the environment in which we live”
Keeping our earth healthy was forever on his mind
He said the job’s not done and he continued to give
In 1970 Earth Day was born, and Gaylord Nelson had begun a grand tradition
That sparked a worldwide effort to clean our air and water and save our land
We’ve come a long way, yet the job’s still not done; we’ve improved our condition
So much remains to accomplish, end clearcutting of rainforests and let the trees stand
Seek out alternative fuels like green hydrogen, reduce greenhouse gasses
Cut oil use, quit burning coal, and don’t dump livestock waste in our streams
Remember friends what’s good for Mother Earth is good for the masses
Help keep her clean and healthy and she will provide many more pleasant dreams
Happy Earth Day everyone!
