Psalm 56:8 says that God keeps count of your tossings; and He puts your tears in His bottle, and writes them down in His book. How do you feel about this?
Hebrews 4:15 says that we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. How do you feel about this?
Romans 8:28 and Genesis 50:20 say that God works all things together for good, and that what people mean for evil, God will use it for good. How do you feel about this?

How do you feel about being dependent on gifts? How do you feel about being a charity case? How do you feel about being needy (like a child)?
How do you feel about risks? When you imaginatively inhabit the stories of Scripture, how do you honestly feel about the sundry, significant, and shocking risks God takes?
Nehemiah reflects on the fact that throughout history God has given His people saviors. As you survey the sundry stories of salvation what stands out to you about the saviors (e.g. Esther, David, Samson, Gideon, etc.)? Does anything strike you as strange? What do you suppose all these strange episodes of salvation are forcing us to acquire a taste for?

Reflection Questions:
Do you imagine God as Someone(s) who gets excited? Or do you picture God as dour and austere? Read Zephaniah 3:14-20 and Nehemiah 8:9-12 and force yourself to fixate on this fundamental festive facet of God’s personality.
How do you feel about the fact that God says that leaders should be followed in a way that makes them glad and joyful? (see Heb.13:17; 2 Cor. 2:1-2). Who do you joyfully listen to (even when they tell you that you’re wrong, and their leadership seems perilous and foolish)?
Who is someone that Jesus hangs out with, and you have a problem with the fact that Jesus is hanging out with that person? (see Jonah 4 and Luke 15:30, 19:7).
When have you felt verklempt with joy because God expressly chose to come hang out the ordinary and the odd?
How have you recently reveled in the fact that God is excited to call you out of hiding and expose everything shameful you’ve ever done, and in so doing – envelope you in His joy and grant you freedom? (See John 4:29)
