In its 27th season, the Stan Rogers Folk Festival (Stanfest) is announcing a major expansion move. Eight additional concerts will be staged in six communities in Guysborough County as part of the new series called the Stanfest Roadshow. The concerts will commence on Monday, July 22 and lead into the annual summer festival in Canso, Nova Scotia, Thursday, July 25 to Sunday, July 28.
"Change is good. There are various ways to grow. With the addition of the Stanfest Roadshow,
we are taking the shows to the people,” shares Troy Greencorn, festival Executive Director.
“We are also giving our passionate and loyal audience an opportunity and reason to come
earlier and stay longer. On top of that, we are creating a lot more employment for artists. This is
an innovation opportunity that was hidden in plain sight. We are excited and community
response has been over the top."

May 17, 2024 Andy Kim Feature (May 2024)
May 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Andy Kim’s “Rock Me Gently,” a song absolutely nobody wanted to sign, produce, or play on the radio in the beginning, but here we are, being in top-rated shows, millions of spins around the world, and no stopping all these years later.
The record was a massive hit in 1974, going all the way to Number 1 in the U.S. and Number 2 in the U.K. as part of its staggering four-month run on the charts. Even if you weren’t alive back then to experience the song’s inexorable pop pull, you’ve probably heard it since, on shows like Ray Donovan and Sex Education or commercials for the Jeep Liberty. And that’s not even mentioning the 1989 cover by country artist Michelle Wright, nor the sample of “Rock Me Gently” that showed up in Mint Royale’s “Take It Easy” 10 years later.
Given its enduring appeal, one can easily forget that, at the time of “Rock Me Gently’s” original release, Kim was already considered washed up in the music business. He was no longer the kid who had driven from his native Montreal to New York on a wing and a prayer to find work at the famous Brill building. The success that had followed included co-writing and singing on the Number 1 song of 1969, “Sugar Sugar” by The Archies, and shifting more than 1.5 million copies of his own take on the Phil Spector/Ronettes classic “Baby I Love You” the very same year. But by 1974, nobody wanted to know. Kim had to release “Rock Me Gently” on his own label, after turndowns from absolutely every producer and established record company he approached. In fact, it was a tough go at radio at first, but the writer who became his own producer of the song never believed in the word ‘no’ to mean anything but another opportunity to create his own destiny.
A variety of forces—including ever-shifting cultural currents and the death of his father—ensured that his career continued to have more than its share of ups and downs. And truth be told, it’s never been in his nature to prioritize the spotlight of personal glory over the work anyway.
But when you’ve touched so many people with your songs—your song in particular, the one with your name on it, that you put so much on the line to record and release—your fans won’t let you fade into obscurity. At age 77, Kim finds himself in the enviable position of being hailed as an elder statesman of pop while enjoying a newfound relevance to contemporary audiences. “I Forgot To Mention,” his 2004 collaboration with one of those aforementioned fans, Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies, got him named the Best Solo Indie Artist of the Year during Canadian Music Week. That paved the way for “comeback albums” like 2010’s Happen Again and 2015’s It’s Decided, the latter of which put Kim on the Arts & Crafts label with hip latter-day artists like Feist, Chilly Gonzales, The Stills and Stars, thanks to Kevin Drew, founder of Arts & Crafts, showcasing his admiration for the iconic artist's timeless music. This collaboration brings together two generations of Canadian music talent, bridging the gap between past and present in the indie music scene. Drew's decision reflects not only his business acumen but also his deep appreciation for Kim's enduring musical legacy.
And every year, his Andy Kim Christmas Show raises big money – over $2.5 million so far - for Toronto charities, thanks in part to support from a roster of talents that’s included Broken Social Scene, Metric, Maestro Fresh Wes, Sarah Harmer, Sam Roberts, Lights, Rush’s Alex Lifeson, Finger Eleven and Ron Sexsmith.
Kim’s name now hangs in a veritable mansion’s worth of hallowed halls, including the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Billboard’s Hit Parade Hall of Fame. He also has his own spot of Canada’s Walk of Fame. And last year, he received the ultimate honor by being made an officer of the Order of Canada, for his irreplaceable contributions to the cultural landscape of his country.

The East Coast Music Association (ECMA) appointed its new Chief Executive Officer, Blanche Israël, a Moroccan French Canadian cultural strategist and professional musician who has called Dartmouth, Nova Scotia home since 2019. She began her new role on Friday, March 1, 2024.

Israël has had various roles in the arts sector and brings a unique blend of experience to the position. As a consultant for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, she developed a comprehensive Cultural Export Analysis, and for the Halifax Regional Municipality, she consulted on the Performing and Visual Arts Venues Needs Assessment. In addition, her work with Music Nova Scotia as a Board Member and her touring and recording experience with JUNO Award-winning artist Jeremy Dutcher, has provided Israël with a broad perspective and understanding of the music industry.

Israël’s skills in strategic finance, partnerships, and understanding of legal requirements in arts organizations are further highlighted by her successful operation of proScenium Services. Through this venture, she generated over $10 million in public and private revenue and supported a wide range of artists and organizations. Israël is a graduate of the University of Toronto’s Arts Management program, holding an Honours Bachelor of Arts. She has been recognized with numerous awards and bursaries, including the CultureNEXT Bursary from the Canadian Arts Summit and the Orpheus Prize in Humanities from the University of Toronto.

“We are thrilled to welcome Blanche to the East Coast Music Association. Her diverse background and deep understanding of the Atlantic Canadian cultural landscape makes her an ideal leader for our organization,” says Debbie Mullins, Chair of the ECMA Board and elected representative from Cape Breton. “We are confident that Blanche’s innovative approach and passion for music will greatly contribute to the growth and success of our music community.”

Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with Dyson Knight, Baha Men lead singer, as he releases a solo single through NSCC’s Music Business Program.
At Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), everyone in the Music Department is aware of a Bahamian student who has achieved international fame in the music industry. Dyson Knight, integral member of Grammy award-winning group Baha Men (memorable for their international hit single Who Let the Dogs Out?), is enrolled in the college’s Music Production and Engineering program, and he is releasing his new single Feeling The Magic today.
Knight ended up at NSCC due to a convergence of circumstances: “I went through a series of challenges post a near fatal car crash in 2021. I felt a strong need to reevaluate my life. One of the things I wanted to act on is my transition from being a frontline singer of Baha Men to taking a role as an engineer/producer/manager of the band. So, although daunting, I decided to move to Canada to study Music Production and Audio Engineering at NSCC in Dartmouth. I ultimately chose this school because it allows me to be with my older children who live in Halifax.”
Knight has been mostly flying under the radar ever since he arrived in Canada, but that’s about to change, as he is set to make waves with the release of his new single Feeling the Magic. This release came out of a contest held every year by the Music Department at NSCC. The Producer Challenge is a competition in which Music Production students are divided into teams tasked with writing and recording a song in one week.
The songs are then evaluated and judged by a panel of local music industry people, and this year’s first-place prize was to have the winning song be commercially released by NSCC’s Music Business class. This Music Business program, offered at the Ivany Campus in Dartmouth, NS, is a graduate certificate program, led by industry veteran Evan Newman. It began last year, where the inaugural class launched the Lulo Music Group.
The team of producers which included Knight won the contest with a song called Feeling the Magic. The song was written and sang by Dyson, and because the finished product was a collaborative effort among students, it nudged Knight to explore avenues a bit outside of the Caribbean pop that has mainly been his calling card so far.
The result was Feeling The Magic, a change of style for Knight, but still a reflection of his continued dedication to creating captivating music. The song is an upbeat funk-disco track with an infectious bass line that will invite you to dance. It has an encouraging and optimistic message, and it evokes positivity and carefree energy. Feeling The Magic is out today.
