Paul's closing paragraph offers a statement of blessing to the churches at Thessalonica. Our modern expression of “have a blessed day” has the same intention, yet Paul attributes the blessing from the author when he writes “the Lord of Peace.” Ultimately when we prescribe blessings we are asking God to bless the obedience of His children.

The disciples were asking Jesus what will it be like before His earthly kingdom is established. He tells them it will be a time of great tribulation. Evil men will lead many astray ( 2 Tim.3). Believers will be hated, hounded, given over (Matt.10:22). Many will fall away, but true faith endures. Endurance doesn't bring about salvation; salvation produces endurance. Who endures? Those who continue in the Word (John 8:31). Those who submit to Christ, are bound to Him, and continue in the faith. They overcame because they did not love their life even unto death (Rev.12:11). Are you ready when the day comes? Will He find you faithful? (Luke 18:8).

Church discipline within the bounds of pursuing peace with all men, is necessary for the realization and acknowledgment of sin against a Holy God. Believers must always choose God over relationships and learn to be content, strive to stay in their own lane, and work hard as the Lord intended. In order to do these things, we must overcome “self”.

What will it be like before Jesus returns to set up His earthly kingdom? The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). Many false prophets will arise and mislead many (Matthew 24:6). Most people’s love will grow cold. Lawlessness will increase (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4, 6-8). The spirit of lawlessness is at work now, but is restrained by God. As lawlessness increases, love decreases. The hallmark of a Christian is to trust and obey (2 Thessalonians 3:1-16). A life of submission starts with Jesus becoming your Lord and Master. This is how you know you love Him, if you keep His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome (1 John 2:3-4, 3:22,24; 5:3). Are you saved? Are you ready? Jesus became the sacrificial Lamb of God to save you from eternity without Him.

The disciples asked Jesus what will be the signs of His return. The time is coming when government intrusion will be on a much larger scale. There will be great pressure to conform and yield. There will be many who will fall away because they never were truly born again; they did not have a saving faith. Lawlessness will increase. There will be a rise of false prophets and many will turn aside to myths (philosophies of man). John 16:8 tells about the ministry of the Holy Spirit to convict the world of sin. John 16:5 reminds us that the Holy Spirit will be with us and in us to remind us and strengthen us to be light in the dark. This world is not spinning out of control. It is moving exactly where God has said it is going to move in preparation for His return. Hebrews 3:7, today, if you hear His voice, come.

Those who profess a subjection to the Gospel will indeed have a desire and drive to live according to it. Those who do not live according to it are to be counted as unruly or undisciplined people. The Christian's duty with the unruly must always be obedience to God over relationships with man, and this is not easy.

The disciples came to Jesus privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” Jesus tell us the darkness hates the light because light exposes their deeds, lawlessness. Persecution and trials will come; many will fall away. Persecution has a way of weeding out, revealing false believers. False prophets will deceive many (cross references: Jeremiah 5:12; 5:30; 6:13; 4:13-15; 20:1-2; 20:9, 23:9-11; 23:14-16; 23:21, 25-30). The solution: confess, repent, give your life to Christ. Hebrews 4:7. "Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts."
It is truly comforting to study this pastoral letter, by God through the writing of Paul, that explains the benefit believers receive through the grace of God who is faithful and cannot lie (2 Tim 2:13). God’s children should expect good from Him as He promised to strengthen and establish them in their sanctification. Furthermore, believers are encouraged by God's people in prayer and fellowship, understanding that it is God who holds them up and He who prevents them from falling (Ps 17:5). Lastly, Christians are compelled to take refuge in God, like David (Ps 16:1), who become fixed on the everlasting hope and confidence in the Lord in His promises to protect from evil in the face of real persecution.

We are not to be frightened by circumstances. Trials will come, persecution will come. Affliction drives us to our knees, into a greater dependence on the Lord; He is all we have - God in us. God uses affliction to prove who we are, to prove that we belong to Him. Just live for Jesus; seek to honor and glorify Him. Be ready! Are you ready?
Matt. 24:1-9, Heb. 10:26-27, 2 Cor.3:13, 1 Thess.5:3, 2 Tim. 1:3, Matt. 13:20-21, 2 Cor. 1:3-6, 2 Cor. 4:16-18, 2 Cor. 6:1-6, 2 Cor. 7:4, Col. 1:24, Rom. 13:1, Matt. 5:10-12, John 17:14, 1 Pet. 4:12-14
Jesus said, "See to it that no one misleads you." (Matt.24:4) The "Five Solas" describe the distinctions of biblical Christianity - by Scripture alone, by faith alone, by grace alone, by Christ alone, to the glory of God alone. Know what Scripture says; you've got to know what the "real" is to make the false obvious (Matthew 7:15). The way of the cross leads home. Jesus died that sinners may be forgiven and given eternal life. Place your faith and trust in Jesus as Lord (Col.2:13-15).
