Lank and I are back to discuss some new Medical Technologies that are changing the world.
University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering-'Person-on-a-chip': Engineers grow 3-D heart, liver tissues for better drug testing-Researchers at U of T Engineering have developed a new way of growing realistic human tissues outside the body. Their "person-on-a-chip" technology, called AngioChip, is a powerful platform for discovering and testing new drugs, and could eventually be used to repair or replace damaged organs.
How about growing bones from your own stem cells? EPIBONE- Imaging & Stem Cell Extraction
We obtain precise 3D model of the anatomical defect from the patient’s CT scan. At the same time we extract adult stem cells from the patient.Graft & Bioreactor Design
Using the 3D image, we design the patient specific graft and a custom-built bioreactor. We expand the stem cells to obtain sufficient quantity.EpiBone Graft Maturation
We grow the bone graft inside the bioreactor which provides environment for bone formation. Stem cells remodel into a personalized bone graft ready for implantation.
These are some of the wonderful things that are changing the world.
