The prohibition is to put a seed in the ground, but the Gemara says very clearly that is not only planting seeds, but any initiation of growth including planting and grafting trees. Several applications for today's life, including eating outside on the grass on Shabbos, washing your hands over grass and dealing with flowers and vases.  Also briefly explain two important principles in Halacha - Psik Raysha and Gerama. פסיק רישא וגרמא
