Dr. M. Hossein Kazemi received his medical degree  from the Tehran University of Medical Sciences. He completed his  residency at the Hofstra School of Medicine/Northwell Health System and  completed his fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of  Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Kazemi is a member of the  American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Society of  Hematology.

“Embracing Our Diversity: Coming Together Against Bias,” a virtual  community dialogue moderated by Nancy Kranich of Rutgers University will  take place from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29.

Co-sponsored by East Brunswick Hadassah, EBPL and the East Brunswick  Human Relations Council, the program aims to initiate a dialogue among  the townships’ diverse communities and generate ideas for embracing  diversity, building bridges and combating bias.

Panelists include East Brunswick residents Neven Abdo, the Rev.  Khristi Lauren Adams, Neha Avadhani, Susanna Chiu, Kamlu Gulrajani, Dan  Rozett and Muhammad K. Hashmi. Mayor Brad Cohen will deliver a welcome.

Kranich is a lecturer at the Rutgers University School of  Communication and Information where she teaches community engagement and  other courses.  She also serves as Special Projects Librarian for the  Rutgers University Libraries and served as American Library Association  president 2000 to 2001. She trained as a public innovator with the  Harwood Institute for Public Innovation and as a convener and moderator  for deliberative public forums, and serves on the board of the National  Issues Forums Institute, as a Library Ambassador for the Harwood  Institute, and as co-leader of the US-Russia Dialogue on the Civic Role  of Libraries in the 21st Century.

With 650 members, East Brunswick Hadassah focuses on connecting and  empowering Jewish women to effect change. The organization works to  advance health and well-being, advocate for women, and build community  in the United States, Israel, and around the world. The local chapter  connects with the local and wider community through educational and  social programs, community service and fundraising events.

The East Brunswick Human Relations Council promotes communication,  respect, and understanding among the diverse members of the broader East  Brunswick community. The Council’s activities include civic programs to  celebrate diversity, educational and social programs to encourage  communication and understanding, and programs to address the causes,  impact, and prevention of bias-related incidents.

Sugirdhana Velpari, MD, board certified gastroenterologist, will lead  this workshop. He is a member of the American College of  Gastroenterology, American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society  and the American Gastroenterology Association. Dr. Velpari is the  director of the Gastrointestinal (GI) Motility and GERD Therapy  Laboratory at Saint Peter’s University Hospital. He is also the  assistant program director of Saint Peter’s University Hospital  Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program.

In this multidisciplinary talk conducted virtually, Drs. Jae Lee and  Phillip Reid will conduct a comprehensive overview for managing common  side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Topics include:

Dr. Jae Lee obtained  his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with highest distinction from  the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, before attending the  University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, where he completed his doctoral  thesis in cancer stem cell biology and was awarded combined MD and PhD  degrees through the Medical Scientist Training Program. He has received  several international travel awards to present his work at meetings of  the International Society for Stem Cell Research. He then completed a  residency in radiation oncology at the University of Michigan in Ann  Arbor, MI, where he was named Chief Resident. He served as  co-investigator on several clinical trials and studies utilizing  advanced imaging to improve tumor control and treatment related side  effects.

Phillip D. Reid, MD obtained his medical degree from  Stanford University, Stanford, CA and completed his residency in  Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA. He  completed his fellowship in oncology/hematology at the Dana Farber  Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. He a clinical instructor at UMDNJ  Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, NJ. Dr. Reid  is board certified in Medical Oncology and Hematology.

Michael Nissenblatt, MD received his medical degree  from Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons, New York. He  completed his residency in medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore  and his fellowship in medical oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital,  Baltimore. Dr. Nissenblatt has received many honors, including Top  Doctor in Jersey Choice, New Jersey Monthly, New York Magazine and New  Jersey Monthly Magazine; St. George National Award of the American  Cancer Society; Best Doctors in America; The Burton L. Eichler Award,  Humanitarian Contribution Recognition; Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award  for Humanism in Medicine; Top Doctors New York Metro Area by Castle  Connolly. Dr. Nissenblatt is also a Clinical Professor of Medicine at  Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, NJ. He is  board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology.

Edward Soffen, MD received his Bachelor of Arts degree  in biology, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, from Johns Hopkins University,  Baltimore, before obtaining his medical degree and his selection to  Alpha Omega Alpha Society from Temple University School of Medicine,  Philadelphia. He completed his residency in radiation oncology at the  Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Dr. Soffen  served on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania and at Fox Chase  Cancer Center. He is currently on the faculty of Rutgers University  Medical School, New Brunswick, New Jersey. He has authored numerous  publications and has received many awards including being selected by  his peers as a “Top Doctor” in New Jersey for over 15 years, and as one  of the “Best Doctors in America”.

At  that time, there was little information available and nowhere to turn  for support. His goal was to make sure that no other family living with  Alzheimer’s disease would have to go through the journey alone. AFA  provides support, services and education to individuals, families and  caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias  nationwide, and fund research for better treatment and a cure. AFA  operates a National Toll-Free Helpline (866-232-84848), staffed entirely  by licenses social workers. AFA provides training and continuing  education to professional caregivers and dementia-care settings. In this multidisciplinary talk conducted virtually, Dr. John Baumann,  Radiation Oncologist, Princeton Radiation Oncology, Dr. Sameer Desai,  Medical Oncologist, Regional Cancer Care Associates, Central Jersey, and  Dr. Darshan Vaidya, Dermatologist, Aura Dermatology will discuss the  impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the diagnosis, treatment, and  management of skin cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Topics include:

Dr. Baumann graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University and  received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School where he also  completed his residency, chief residency and fellowship in radiation  oncology. He previously served as Chief of Radiation Oncology at the  Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington, D.C., where he was the Associate  Program Director of the National Cancer Institutes’ resident training  program for radiation oncology and served as a member of the  radiotherapy committee of the Gynecologic Oncology Group as well as the  Radiological Advisory Medical Team of the U.S. Department of Defense.  Dr. Baumann was named as the Consultant to the Surgeon General for  radiation oncology and also served as the President of the Medical Staff  at the University Medical Center at Princeton. He has lectured  internationally, published multiple articles in the medical literature,  and has received numerous honors including being selected by his peers  for many years as one of the “Best Doctors” in the New York/New Jersey  region.

Dr. Desai received his medical degree from Yale University School of  Medicine and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Beth  Israel-Deaconnes Medical Center, Boston. He completed his fellowship in  hematology & medical oncology at the University of Michigan Medical  Center, Ann Arbor. He holds leadership positions in the Middlesex County  Medical Society and at Saint Peter's University Hospital and is  board-certified in hematology and medical oncology.

Dr. Vaidya was born in Zambia (Africa) and moved to New Jersey with  his family when he was 6 years old. After obtaining his Bachelors Degree  at Rutgers University and Medical Degree at New Jersey Medical School  (UMDNJ), he moved to Providence, RI for his residency training in  Dermatology at Brown University. He eventually decided to settle down in  New Jersey with his beautiful wife Sonia, who is an Optometrist.  Specializing in adult and pediatric dermatology and surgery of the skin,  Dr. Vaidya treats patients from infants to the elderly. He performs  cosmetic dermatological procedures including skin rejuvenation,  microneedling, lasers, Botox, and fillers.
