The penultimate 2015 radio show gets a special treat in the form of musical shape-shifter Ayrian. When we met a decade ago, Ayrian was holding together the one weekly electronic music event in Chico, Velour Lounge. He was playing house and breakbeats but listened to everything and encouraged a wide variety of sounds within those evenings -and gave me my first place to play on my return to Chico. Since then he's gone many directions in his life including samba drumming, entrepreneurial business, producing original music, and starting a family.  Now I'm happy to provide him a return trip, back to the radio show he played nearly two years ago, this time to get a bit deeper into the psychedelic, soulful and tectonic bass sounds that move him. The first hour of the recording is all Ayrian, and in the second hour we're trading sets of 3 tracks back-and-forth mixing on the radio console, and the joy comes through.  No playlists.  Download the show (120 MB MP3)

Inspired by a trip to San Francisco this week, where the art/music/technology group Gray Area presented the prodigiously talented Nicolas Jaar in a swanky private venue off a gritty back alley. This isn't Nico's music, but it's my reflection on taking more risks, moving between more styles and time periods, and enjoying the ride. I also came straight to the show after the amazing Chikoko fashion show, an experimental celebration of the body and the creative ways we present it in cloth, balloons, vinyl, paper, ... huge feelings of appreciation for Chico's art and amazing people flowing through me during this radio show. Throw-back-Thursday! Ten years ago this weekend, my wife and I had our bachelor/bachelorette party in San Francisco, invited all of our friends, and basically said goodbye to the Bay Area - we moved to Chico just a few weeks later after the wedding. I opened the party, which my talented brother Joe headlined, and I played my ass off - all vinyl, of course. It remains one of my favorite sets I've ever played. 20 years ago I saw Sean Yoder's name on an old program schedule when I was just a fledgling DJ at our college radio station. By that time he'd already been an LA punk gadfly, a writer, and a music collector. In the subsequent 20 years he's been a PR agent, 1-man record store, party promoter, husband, blogger, scene pillar, my friend for the last 10 years (particularly glad about that part), and a constant source of surprising musical insight.
