  • Built By Fire: The Complete Audiobook

Listen to the Built by Fire audiobook here and get your copy of the book at DavidBurnell.com

Built by Fire is the story of a life forged in the crucible of service—and what happens after the fire. From military operations and intelligence work to search and rescue missions, humanitarian deployments, and high-risk environments around the world, David Burnell lived a life defined by action, responsibility, and purpose. In places where seconds mattered and lives were on the line, strength, discipline, and training were everything.

But the fire that forges a man does more than strengthen him. Over time, it also reveals the cracks.

This book goes beyond the missions and into what follows—the quiet weight carried long after the moment has passed, the unseen cost of sacrifice, and the breaking that comes when strength alone is no longer enough. When identity begins to unravel and the tools that once worked no longer hold, the question becomes unavoidable: what happens when the fire doesn’t just shape you—but consumes you?

Built by Fire is not just a story of service. It is a story of reckoning.

Through deeply personal experiences, David Burnell shares an unfiltered account of resilience, loss, leadership, and the emotional and spiritual toll of a life spent standing between chaos and the innocent. But this is not where the story ends. In the aftermath of breaking comes something unexpected—rebuilding. Not through force of will, but through surrender. Not through enduring alone, but through faith.

Grounded in a belief in God the Father and the redeeming power of Jesus Christ, this book becomes a story of transformation—of discovering that true strength is not found in holding everything together, but in being restored through Him.

For those who have walked through their own fire—whether in service, in loss, or in life—this book offers something real. A reminder that you can be forged, you can be broken, and by faith, you can rise again with purpose.

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑ “The book is so captivating. The real life stories really make you think about life and humanity and those who have the call to offer that to all. • Red: The Ghost on the Corner

In this gripping episode of the Echo Valor Podcast, David Burnell shares a raw, personal chapter from his youth, featured in his book, Built by Fire. Set in Lawndale, California, “The Boy Named Red” recounts the haunting experience of growing up as the son of an LAPD officer in a neighborhood where that badge made you a target.

Every morning, David walked past a house where a red-haired gang member—ironically named Red—would threaten to kill his father. Red wasn’t just a bully. He was a storm brewing. A ghost-in-the-making. Years later, that threat became real when Red engaged in a fatal shootout with a Torrance police officer just blocks from David’s home.

This is more than a story about fear—it’s about vigilance, violence, and the vow of a young boy who learned that the good guys can never truly clock out. Through fire drills, fists, flags, and fear, David forged a mindset that would shape a lifetime of service and readiness.

“The bad kids were always ready… so I made myself ready too.”

This episode blends vivid storytelling, emotional reflection, and a lesson that resonates beyond the streets of Lawndale—into the heart of anyone who has ever stood for something in a world that pushes back.

Based on a true story from the book Built by Fire by David Burnell.
