This time, we’re rolling the tape back to February and March 2005 for one of the most memorable Champions League last-16 ties of the era: Chelsea vs Barcelona.
The first leg at the Camp Nou saw Barcelona come from behind to win 2-1, with Didier Drogba sent off in a controversial night in Spain. But it was the second leg at Stamford Bridge that became the real classic.
Chelsea produced a sensational 4-2 victory, overturning the tie on the night and progressing 5-4 on aggregate in a game packed with goals, drama and controversy.
We take a closer look at the José Mourinho Chelsea, including the influence of Frank Lampard, John Terry and Petr Čech, while also discussing the brilliance of Ronaldinho, who was already establishing himself as one of the greatest players in world football.
From Stamford Bridge under the lights to one of the most iconic moments of the early Champions League knockout stages, this is another European Night Revisited.
🎙️ Echoes of Europe
⚽ European football. Iconic nights. The stories behind them.
European Nights Revisited is back! 🇮🇹🏆
This time, we're heading back to April 2005 for one of the most infamous Champions League ties in history — AC Milan vs Inter Milan.
With both legs taking place at the San Siro, this bitter Derby della Madonnina rivalry produced a tie that ultimately went down in the record books as a 5–0 aggregate victory for AC Milan. After a 2–0 victory in the first leg, Milan were leading 1–0 in the second before the match was abandoned following serious crowd trouble — bringing a dramatic end to an already unforgettable Champions League encounter.
But this episode isn't just about the scoreline. We're taking a deep dive into Carlo Ancelotti's phenomenal 2005 AC Milan team, looking at the quality they possessed across virtually every position. From Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta at the back, to Cafu and Andrea Pirlo, and the brilliance of Kaká in midfield, we explore what made this Milan side one of the great teams of the era.
We'll discuss Kaká's rise, Pirlo's transformation into one of football's greatest deep-lying playmakers, Cafu's extraordinary career, and just how much talent Ancelotti had at his disposal.
And as always, we start with “What's Echoing Around Europe”, where we look at the latest talking points from across European football — including the ongoing Manchester City financial charges saga and the latest developments surrounding the 114/115 alleged Premier League breaches.Another European night. Another trip back through Champions League history.
This is European Nights Revisited. ⚽
European Nights Revisited returns! 🏆
We’re heading back to October 2010 and the San Siro for one of the wildest Champions League group-stage matches of the modern era — Inter Milan 4–3 Tottenham Hotspur.
Inter raced into a commanding lead, but a young Gareth Bale had other ideas. With Spurs down to 10 men, Bale produced a sensational second half, scoring a hat-trick and almost dragging Tottenham back into the game.
But this episode isn't just about Bale. We’ll also be looking at Philippe Coutinho, who was only at the beginning of his Inter Milan career at the time. We’ll discuss his role in this era of Inter, his development and how his career would eventually take him to the Premier League and beyond.
From Inter’s attacking brilliance and Samuel Eto’o to Bale’s unforgettable performance and Coutinho’s early European journey, we revisit one of the Champions League’s great nights.
European Nights Revisited — where we roll the tape back and relive the Champions League nights that became unforgettable.
