Chapter 6.4 of U.S. History explores the struggles Native Americans faced following the formation of the United States, particularly in response to westward expansion onto their lands. Early resistance in the Old Northwest, led by figures like Little Turtle and Blue Jacket, initially resulted in Native victories, but eventually, U.S. forces prevailed at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, leading to the Treaty of Greenville. Native leaders responded in various ways: Little Turtle chose peace and partial assimilation, Handsome Lake advocated for a cultural blend, and Tenskwatawa called for a full return to traditional ways. His brother, Tecumseh, pursued military resistance, pushing for Native unity against U.S. encroachment. Their cause suffered a major blow after the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811 and Tecumseh’s death in 1813. Though their efforts did not stop U.S. expansion, Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa left a lasting legacy of resistance and cultural pride.
