Luxurious.
On December 30, 1903, more than a thousand people entered the Iroquois Theatre for a matinee performance.
Many were families.
Hundreds were children.
Less than two hours later, the building had become a death trap.
More than 600 people would never leave alive.
The Iroquois Theatre had opened only weeks earlier in the heart of Chicago. Promoted as one of the city’s finest venues, it embodied the promise of modern entertainment architecture.
But behind the ornate design were dangerous flaws.
Emergency exits were confusing and difficult to operate.
Some escape routes were incomplete.
Firefighting equipment was inadequate.

Some reached windows overlooking an alley, where desperate attempts were made to cross to neighboring buildings.
What had been designed as a palace of entertainment became, within minutes, a maze with almost no margin for error.
By the time the fire was extinguished, more than 600 people were dead.
It remains one of the deadliest building fires in American history.
But the story of the Iroquois Theatre is not only about fire.
