Ed Pienta (pee-n-tah) has struggled with his weight since grade school. Everyone called him Husky, and family and friends made excuses for his weight by saying "He was always big boned." He was always active playing sports but always found food as a reward. His childhood doctor even prescribed drugs for weight control. As he entered adulthood, he tried several hospital programs and also Weight Watchers, losing 75 lbs., but continued to struggle with emotional eating, snacking all day, and eating fast food. The rollercoaster of losing and gaining weight continued, and then on Jan. 1st, 2022, the time was right to retire. Almost 70 years old and 252 lbs, he decided to get fit and healthy. Living now in a 55+ community with many options to be

active, he decided to work out by walking and swimming. In 10 months, his weight went down to 240 lbs, but then plateaued. Feeling frustrated, he joined a group weighing in weekly at the Lodge; being held accountable might be an answer. After little progress, he met a woman named Phyliss, noticing she had lost a considerable amount of weight. She said she was Intermittent Fasting. He had tried IF in the past but gave up after not seeing any progress after 2 weeks. Phyliss said "Give it time." He started fasting that day with a 16:8 program. Ed purchased Gin Stephens Fast Feast Repeat and Graeme Currie’s The Fasting Highway books. Graeme’s book had an author picture, but Ed felt something was different. After several weeks of 16:8, he moved to 20:4 and saw some progress in the way his clothes fit and how good he was feeling. He began eating healthier while still eating things he liked. No counting points or carbs. While feeling better and clothes fitting better, he started to see weight coming off. On March 31, 2023, the scale read 198.8 -- the first time he was under 200 lbs in 50+ years! He now continues his quest to 185 lbs or so and is more active than ever, swimming 30 laps every other day and walking 2 to 3 miles a day. On May 21st he will play baseball for the first time since 1999 in a 65+ league. It’s now the middle of May, and while the weight loss has slowed a bit, fluctuating plus/minus 3-5 pounds, he is not worrying. About it, he considers Graeme’s book the driving force for a lot of his success.
