  • Unlocking Choice? KLDiscovery Launches Nebula Enterprise™ Server-Rack Appliance
According to Christopher Weiler, CEO of KLDiscovery Inc., “Widespread public cloud adoption among eDiscovery software providers has effectively limited the choices available to customers who have unique geographic, security, or other business constraints. Meanwhile, many eDiscovery software providers have made architectural decisions that effectively lock them and their customers into the public cloud.”

  • A New Financial Ecosystem? NIST Draft Report on Cybersecurity for Open Banking
This new draft report from NIST on Open Banking describes a new kind of financial ecosystem that gives third-party financial service providers open access to consumer banking, transactions, and other financial data from banks and non-bank financial institutions through the use of application programming interfaces (APIs). It is governed by a set of security profiles, application interfaces, and guidelines for customer experiences and operations. Ecosystem-enabled banking means that there are not predefined direct relationships or “supply chains” of financial products and services. Rather, the flow of debits and credits between these products and services are executed at the discretion of the customer.

  • The Criticality of New Ideas: Considerations from the 2021 Global Innovation Index
According to World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director-General Daren Tang. “This year’s Global Innovation Index shows us that in spite of the massive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on lives and livelihoods, many sectors have shown remarkable resilience – especially those that have embraced digitalization, technology, and innovation. As the world looks to rebuild from the pandemic, we know that innovation is integral to overcoming the common challenges that we face and to constructing a better future. The Global Innovation Index is a unique tool to guide policy-makers and businesses in charting plans to ensure that we emerge stronger from the pandemic.”

  • eDiscovery Mergers, Acquisitions, and Investments in Q4 2021
From Consilio and Epiq to Driven and Innovative Discovery, the following findings, data points, and tracking charts highlight information that may be useful for understanding M&A+I activity patterns in the eDiscovery ecosystem from October 1, 2021, through December 31, 2021. During 4Q21 there were at least 14 M&A+I events, a pulse rate that appears to be the highest Q4 investment pulse rate at least since 2015.

  • DAM Ransomware! A Detection, Avoidance, and Mitigation (DAM) Framework for Ransomware
Ransomware attacks have emerged as a major cybersecurity threat wherein user data is encrypted upon system infection. Latest ransomware strands using advanced obfuscation techniques along with offline C2 Server capabilities are hitting individual users and big corporations alike. This problem has caused business disruption and, of course, financial loss. Since there is no such consolidated framework that can classify, detect and mitigate ransomware attacks in one go, the authors of this review are motivated to present Detection Avoidance Mitigation (DAM), a theoretical framework to review and classify techniques, tools, and strategies to detect, avoid and mitigate ransomware. This review and the presented framework may be beneficial for cybersecurity, information governance, and legal discovery professionals seeking to deal with the challenge of ransomware.

  • Assessment and Advice: ENISA Update on Log4j Vulnerability
On December 9th, information about a critical unauthenticated Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability (CVE-2021-
44228) that is affecting the well-known Java logging package Log4j used by many popular applications and web services was tweeted along with a proof-of-concept (PoC) posted on GitHub. This vulnerability could allow the attacker full control of the affected server if a user-controlled string is logged. Since it is easy to be exploited, the impact of this vulnerability is quite severe. This ENISA overview and updated CERT-EU security advisory may be beneficial for cybersecurity, information governance, and legal discovery professionals in the eDiscovery ecosystem facing the challenge of this vulnerability.

  • From Taxonomies to Threats? Securing Machine Learning Algorithms
According to the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), findings from the recently published report "Securing Machine Learning Algorithms" indicate that there is no unique strategy in applying a specific set of security controls to protect machine learning algorithms. However, the overall cybersecurity posture of organizations that use machine learning algorithms can be enhanced by carefully choosing controls designed for these algorithms. As these controls are not validated in-depth, nor standardized in how they should be implemented, further research should focus on creating benchmarks for their effectiveness.
