  • What is Marcus Jooste saying to Parliament?
In this edition of Editing Allowed, special correspondent in Cape Town, Rob Rose Editor at the Financial Mail is listening to Marcus Jooste trying to explain what happened to all the money that Steinhoff lost. Apparently Marcus has told the parliamentary committee hearing that he knows nothing about anything... Rob explains in more details what was said.

In part two the panel discusses the current economic situation as South Africa is in a recession and with a dark cloud hanging over land, we now know that President Ramaphosa is going to pursue the expropriation of land without compensation and that he wants to make the Constitution more specific on the matter, but in the absence of knowing quite what sort of words he is going to use it is impossible for anybody surely to even plant a tree on a farm without knowing for sure if the farm will be around to harvest anything. • Land reform issues could cause trade wars for SA
There's been a lot of discussion about land and the American think tank Institute has just recommended to the American government that they push us out or threaten to push us out of AGOA (African Growth and Opportunity Act) which means that it will start a mini trade war with America which is something that South Africa just cannot afford. What is making matters worse is that the ANC is not providing clarity on the matter.

Peter Bruce and the panel weigh in on the seriousness of the matter and how it could possibly affect our future. Editing Allowed

  • Editing Allowed - talking Rand volatility and inflation
Taking a look at the Turkish Lira and how the current emerging market crisis is affecting the country. The rand volatility during this week quite clearly shows that the emerging market crisis is not a “rand story” and that we are just getting caught up in it. The rand is one of the most liquid currencies in the world, unfortunately when emerging markets are being held at respectable levels, the rand is an easy victim in some ways. What does this mean for our inflation? In a country that is struggling to grow above one percent, the panel takes a look at various aspects of our economy. Editing Allowed

  • What was Obama's message to SA?
It has been quite a week "so far" in South Africa. It is Nelson Mandela Centenary with a magnificent event in Johannesburg on Tuesday where former US president Barack Obama gave a long and his most public speech since leaving the White House in the beginning of 2017. What was interesting was how South African received his speech and if you look beyond the smaller parties making a noise in the media, most South Africans are on board for a kinder, friendlier capitalism that will sort out poverty of being fair and businesses not being so repatiously being greedy.
