EDP10: Ballarat marathon

Listen Later

Episode 10 was a massive deep dive by Dean and Ryan as they unpacked their weeks leading up to the marathon.

The lads unpack their final training week and reflect on what may have contributed (positively or negatively) to their race, they go into how the carb load was structured in real terms - what they were eating and when, how they managed this around the real life issues.

Dean provides an amazing insight into the mind of a 2:17 marathoner at all points throughout the race including his mentality and how he is strategically trying to place as high up in the finishing order as possible, how he is measuring and distributing his effort throughout, essentially a full analysis and breakdown of what it takes to podium at a big marathon like Ballarat when times go out of the window and you are fighting for places.

Ryan breaks down what he feels was a disappointing result and reflects on some of the things that may have contributed towards that, provides insight into what he is thinking as his measures of success begin to fall away in the second half of the race and how he managed to cling on to still secure a PB despite his legs failing him due to potentially not adjusting goals based on the final few weeks of interrupted prep.

The lads touch on what might be next and answer some listener questions regarding the race. Plus the winners of the 'guess the finishing time' competitions are revealed.

All of the usual segments will return to episode 11 but we wanted to do the race justice and provide a complete and honest review of our experiences.
