Elder Brothers? Official Podcast

Friends have asked where I have been lately. The answer to that question is quite straightforward: I slipped into a time portal and was transported back to the year 2000. As proof of this journey, I brought back a crate of records from my old collection and have compiled them into mixtape format.

From the chaos of ruin emerges a new creative spirit. Steam rises violently from the beneath the pavement. Grass sprouts where civilization has ceased to exist. The retro futuristic humanity trolley passes by overhead, silently sprinting forward on a single concrete rail. And amidst all of this kinetic energy, a new persona arrives on the scene — Mr. A. From his apartment overlooking the Detroit River, where strange things are known to happen, a musical journey takes place on a late summer afternoon.

Let us pause to pay homage to one of the great disco vocalists of all time. With the recent passing of Loleatta Holloway, dance music has lost another brave voice to father time. In this mix, Ben takes Ellis D's unauthorized pressing of Loleatta's epic spoken word riff from Better Days, one of NYC's finest disco venues from the late 70's, and lays it over a 112 minute mixtape that combines some classic house jams with new cuts from the crates. The spirit remains.

“I never thought of myself as a good singer,” Ms. Holloway said in 2009. “When I was 5 years old I started singing in church and I hated my voice because I sounded like a grown woman, not a child. I was ashamed of it."

- Excerpt from John Pareles' obituary: "Loleatta Holloway, Gospel and Disco Singer, Is Dead at 64"

"I sure do [know the acapella recording by Loleatta Holloway]. I recorded it. And anyone who tells you different is either wrong, or lying. Here's the story: In 1985, Loleatta Holloway did a rare live performance at Better Days. Rare, because she didn't do many, and Better Days did very few live dates as well. The main reason was that Better Days was a round room, and the feedback problems with 30,000 watts of subwoofer output were serious. But Loleatta was an exception. Along with First Choice, she was the most important artist for the Better Days crowd."

- Bruce Forest in an email to Jahsonic.com

Part 2 of this series takes us into the depths of New York nightlife in the early 90's, when clubs like the original Sound Factory, the Palladium and Red Zone were the breeding grounds for new forms of dance music. What was most striking about this era was the unique blend of mainstream artists with underground house remixes, resulting in accessible yet innovative grooves and hooks. Unlike the dance music of today, the tracks were actual fully developed "songs" rather than snippets of usable material, and their ability to remain fresh 20 years on is truly a testament to the quality of their productions.
