This week’s Scrumptious Electrik Cake is a reflection on the dance floor as archive, as wellness space, as a kind of sonic heirloom. Think of it like this: the same way Monet painted his cathedral series in soft, impressionistic repetition, utilizing “his ability to capture the essence of a scene quickly then finish it later using a sketch combined with his memory of the scene,” Roy Lichtenstein later reinterpreted them in graphic, industrial, punctilious lines as one who was said to be “never shy about appropriating a theme.” Some called Lichtenstein’s effort mockery. Others called it homage. But either way, something - an essence (Dasein?) was carried over—even if the brushstrokes changed.

Electrik Cake with The Valiant Queen:  My Dystopian Playground

Times are very crazy right now.  The world is at a crossroads... old friends are becoming estranged and there is uncertainty everywhere.  But wait - isn't there always uncertainty?  What is so insidious about now?  Because LOVE is growing cold.

The world is literally crumbling, so I made a crumbly cake.  One that should be consumed with our fraying social structures in mind and with strategies about how to survive.  OR, you could just light some gorgeous smelling incense, fire up your colored LED lights, dim the lights, grab a beverage of your choice, and dance the crazy away.

Maurice.  This is my list of greats that have hugely influenced my love for Dance Music.  They are the musicians and artists of my youth.  They are all Beyond the Veil.  May they Rest in Eternal Peace.  I mixed in a few new kids too.  I dedicate this show to all of them.  A SOUL, FUNK AND DISCO CAKE FOR THE GREATS!

1 Michael Jackson - Rock With You (SWG Extended Mix)
Rock With You is my favorite song by Michael Jackson, and this version of "Rock With You" is brilliant to me. It is stripped down so you can hear all the tasty elements that cradle his voice.  When I listen to music, I try to isolate the bassline and I love the groovy freedom of it in this song It is altogether chord establisher, percussion instrument and bridge maker - and it is marvelous!  Next, I isolate the drums.  That iconic opening riff catapults me right into the groove every time! But the most awesome part of the song are those delicious meticulous sixteenth notes on the hats and that groovy percolator! It's Chef's Kiss!! Mwah!

Listen deeply to this mix with me.  Ugh. This mix is excellent.  Check out the lush, lush orchestration that lovingly frames Nick's voice - and our wonderful Valerie gorgeously killing that piano!!  But that's not the essence I want to focus on.  It's the way they play off of each other.  If you've ever seen them perform together you know about their radiating synergy.  It's completely evident in this track.  Man I wish I could have been in the studio when they were cutting this.  I know the whole joint was full of energy.  Hats off to Dimitri from Paris for respectfully reimagining this classic.
