As Christians, how do we respond in the face of a crisis? 

When a crisis happens in our world, it’s easy to question our faith, and it’s hard to replace the panic we face with the peace we’re promised as Jesus-followers. 

So, what can we do as Christians in response to natural disasters, pandemics, or any other scary unknowns we face?

We live in a time where there is no shortage of information. And that’s an incredible gift! Especially in times of disaster, it’s wonderful to be able to communicate quickly, take action swiftly, and connect globally on current events. But when we consume too much information—particularly in isolation—it can leave us feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and alone. 

In a world where there’s a new headline every hour, it can be easy to start living in fear. But as followers of Jesus, we are called to live by faith—not to live in fear. 

As Christians, how do we respond in the face of a crisis?

So, what can we do as Christians in response to natural disasters, pandemics, or any other scary unknowns we face? 

He Is a Gift to All Who Believe in Jesus

Acts 2:38 ESV: And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

We can never give one hundred percent of ourselves in the present if we keep dwelling on the past.

It is heartbreaking to see so many people live their lives camping out in the past that cannot be changed and turning their backs on a grand future. We all know it is impossible to be effective in two places simultaneously and the only person who could accomplish that is God. We can never give one hundred percent of ourselves in the present if we keep dwelling on the past. Our potential will never reach its maximum capacity; future goals get delayed, insecurity and fear will dominate, the flesh will rule and life will become one heap of complaining. There is a lot at stake to remain, and truthfully your life will be unhappy.

It is a dangerous thing to live desiring for what was and making light of what is.

‬‬And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

If only we could come to place in our lives where we believe God’s plan is better than ours.

When we look back and constantly dwell on the past, it seems to offer us a sense of safety even if the situation we were in was a dangerous one physically, emotionally or mentally. This is because as humans, change and newness always bring with it a sense of challenge, stretching and the unknown. But in the past we find comfort because we know all that we were dealing with, it was familiar even though it was difficult. Sounds strange, I know but I have seen time and time again in ministry where people will go back to abusive homes, manipulative relationships and immoral lifestyles just because it’s familiar and provides a false sense of security. 

I grew up in an abusive home, and it seemed easier to deal with the abuse than to open up to someone in authority for help; again it was the unknown of the future that kept me bound to that situation. Today I am writing about moving from the past and looking forward to the future because the life that God has for his children is always better than what we will leave behind.
