State of MA, what are you thinking?

Had one of the worst dreams last night that related to work and I’m having some trouble shaking the feeling. I figured it was better to stay up rather than sit in bed thinking about it.  How many of you have had work related nightmares where you wake up in a cold sweat?  I really hate these. Those of you attending the IAEC Event in NY have a great time and thank you for supporting the IAEC (http://www.iaec.org/IAEC/IAEC_Elevator_Consultants_-_International_Association_of_Elevator_Consultants.html) as well as the EESF.

We almost had a show without elevators/escalators being in the news. When that day happens I’m going to be so happy. Here’s my challenge to everyone. Make elevators and escalators so safe that nothing happens which would pull them into a news article. I’ve been getting up early every Wednesday morning at 2 am since 2005 and I think it’s time we don’t read about them anymore. What do you say?

A pretty bad accident in Philadelphia happened this week which left two in the hospital.  Preliminary news stations report that the elevator traveled up and did not stop before hitting the hoist way ceiling and possible pushing through into the machine room.  It’s been a while since something like this was covered in the news and I’m sure we’ll be learning more as the investigation continues into what may have caused the accident.  Think about this the next time you have a bad day or feel rushed at trying to get all the work you have to do done in the time you have to do it.

I wish I could say that it was a quiet week in news but it was far from that with too many accidents.  Be careful out there as temperatures rise which can lead to some significant fatigue and dehydration if you’re in the field.  Remember that heat can serious effect any elevator system especially with roof top machine rooms that are not climate controlled.  To balance the accidents the EESF has launched the new children’s Safe T Riders interactive website as a major tool in reaching kids and parents.  I’ll have more talk about this on an upcoming show.  There will be no show next week as I’ll be on vacation with my family. If you haven’t planned yours yet do so as soon as you can.

I truly wish that fewer articles found online equaled a safer week in news but this week was far from that.  One article has me screaming at the top of my lungs another makes me want to throw up.  Will there be a day we see escalators no longer being used?  In other non vertical transportation news Comcast/Xfinity had a major phone system outage across the United States yesterday which affected huge areas of large metropolitan cities so if you couldn’t get through to a company or friend this is way. Also if you have kids you most likely are scratching your head about this “Pokemon Go” thing they are playing.

I enjoyed a summer thunderstorm as I made it into the office this morning to do the show. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to enjoy the power that lightening holds as the sky illuminated with powerful flashes.  I always feel so small whenever I’m in a storm like this which made me realize, and want to share that never ever believe that your actions or words are insignificant in any way.  We all have the ability to change a negative attitude filled with concern into a positive one.  I mentioned on last week’s show how important it is for each of us to share the message of safety with those we run into who are truly interested in the work we all do. I appreciate Bob Shepherd (NAESA International Exec Director) pointing this out at the Elevator U Conference in Quincy.  You and I are unique in what we do for a living; we’re a small population of the working class.  Take pride in being part of this awesome industry and share the how to ride elevators, escalators and moving walkways safely (http://www.eesf.org/). There were once again too many accidents on the show which could have been prevented.
