Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill and developed by Extell, Central Park Tower at 217 West 57th Street in New York City’s (NYC) Midtown is set to break records, including the tallest residential skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere, New York YIMBY reports. Work has surpassed the 100th floor. The development will house 179 residences, including a three-story penthouse with its own outdoor pool and terrace. At US$4 billion, sales are expected to be the most expensive sellout for any residential building. Extell has officially launched sales with the highest price thus far a 53rd-floor unit at US$95 million. Topping out is expected by early spring 2019.

SCHINDLER DEBUTS AUTONOMOUS, SELF-CLIMBING ROBOT

As part of a research collaboration with the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), Schindler announced its Robotics Installation System for Elevators (R.I.S.E.) on October 17. To be displayed at the CTBUH 2018 Conference in Dubai on October 21-25, the autonomous, self-climbing robot intended to safely install elevators in high-rise buildings. The technology was recently used to install several elevators in tall buildings in Europe. R.I.S.E. was developed to eliminate the repetitive, physically demanding work of drilling multiple holes in concrete walls to set anchor bolts for guide rails with greater precision. According to Schindler, R.I.S.E. is "paving the way for greater automation and digitization in the elevator industry" and improves worker safety and quality. The two-year partnership with CTBUH is focused on research into robotics and automation processes in the construction of tall buildings.

Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant subway elevators that are part of the 1,127-ft.-tall 85 Broad Street residential supertall project in downtown New York City (NYC) by Madison Equities drew criticism from some who claimed they presented a terrorism risk, a claim Madison Equities CEO Robert Gladstone called "absurd" in an interview with New York YIMBY. The elevators, part of the project designed by CetraRuddy, were greenlit by the city earlier this year. Gladstone said “if someone wanted to maximize damage, blowing up an elevator would be the last place that they would make such an attempt. The design and construction of the elevators will absorb the energy of an explosive device."

NYC SUBWAY ESCALATOR MISHAP FATAL FOR BRONX MAN

A 48-year-old man from Bronx, New York, strangled to death on his own shirt after falling on an escalator at the Intervale Avenue station of the New York City (NYC) Subway in Longwood, Bronx, NBC New York reports. The incident happened early on October 14 after the man had been purportedly drinking. He was found unresponsive at the top landing of the escalator shortly before 4 a.m. and was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
