50 HUDSON YARDS INCHES INTO SUPERTALL TERRITORY IN NYC
Starting to take shape next to 15, 30, 35 and 55 Hudson Yards in New York City’s (NYC) massive Hudson Yards development, 50 Hudson Yards has grown from 984 to 1,011 ft. tall, bringing it further into supertall territory, New York YIMBY reports. The source notes the approximately 60-story Norman Foster + Partners-designed tower is the last in Hudson Yards' first phase to take shape and the largest by floor area, containing 2.9 million sq. ft. of office space. Related Cos., Oxford Properties and Mitsui Fudosan announced a US$3.8-billion deal to finance its construction in fall 2017. BlackRock investment-management firm has signed a lease for 850,000 sq. ft. across the 15 lower floors. Completion is anticipated in early 2019.

PLAN TO BUILD CHINA’S TALLEST TOWER SCALED DOWN BY 20%
An expansion of Tianhe Airport in Wuhan, China, approximately 25 km from Greenland Wuhan Center, has prompted the government to reduce the tower’s height from 636 m to 500 m to ensure aviation safety, Mingtiandi reports. In the works for more than a decade and set to contain hotels, apartments, shopping centers and offices, Greenland Wuhan Center was to become China’s tallest building. It will now be the country’s fifth tallest, well below the 632-m-tall Shanghai Tower and Ping An Finance Center in Shenzhen. Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill, the tower is heading toward completion, with more than 1,000 office and residential units up to the 85th floor approved for presale.

SALESFORCE HAS DESIGNS ON PLANNED CHICAGO SKYSCRAPER
Software giant Salesforce wants to bring up to 5,000 jobs to Chicago and anchor the up-to-950-ft.-tall Wolf Point South tower, one of three being planned by Hines as part of the Wolf Point development at the confluence of the North and East branches of the Chicago River, Crain’s reports. Salesforce wants to grow its Midwest presence with the new location, which would be more than three times the size of its current Chicago office at 111 West Illinois Street that houses approximately 1,000 employees. However, several contentious details would have to be worked out first, perhaps most notably obtaining city permission to erect “extremely extensive” signage on the skyscraper that includes a video wall — a move that would go directly against an ordinance preventing ostentatious signage enacted in 2014 in response to the “Trump” sign on the Trump International Hotel & Tower.
DEVELOPER BREAKS GROUND ON CAMBODIA’S FUTURE TALLEST
Representatives of China's Overseas Cambodian Investment Corp. (OCIC) and government officials gathered in Diamond Island, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on August 18 for a groundbreaking ceremony for Morgan Tower, which promises to become Cambodia's tallest building at 46 stories, Khmer Times reports. The 210-m-tall structure will contain offices, a hotel, a restaurant and a sky bar, and will have an energy-efficient design. OCIC Chairman Okhna Pung Kheav Se said Cambodia's economic policies are sound, and that the kingdom will soon have "hundreds of high-rise buildings." Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong added that China continues to invest heavily in Cambodia — not just in buildings, but also infrastructure such as roads and bridges.
FRANKFURT TOWER WITH SCHINDLER ELEVATORS NEARLY FINISHED
Omniturm, a 45-story mixed-used building with a shifting floorplate design by Bjarke Ingels Group and a Schindler elevator system, is nearly complete in the central business district (CBD) of Frankfurt, Germany, designboom reports. The lower part of Omniturm houses more than 475,000 sq. ft. of office space in a "slender and rational stack," with the floorplates then spiraling outward to house 88,200 sq. ft. of residential space. At the top, the structure returns to a simple block design. Also including 18,000 sq. ft. of publicly accessible areas, the project is being developed by Tishman Speyer and targeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.
INDIAN RAIL OFFICIAL: TAKE CARE WITH SENIORS ON ESCALATORS
An official at a railway station serving passengers in Bhubaneswar, the capital of the Indian state of Odisha in eastern India, urged relatives of senior citizens to accompany them on escalators, following an incident on August 22 in which an elderly woman fell and suffered minor injuries to her leg, The Telegraph reports. Bhubaneswar Railway Station has heavy daily footfall of approximately 80,000, with 200 trains leaving or passing through each day. There are two escalators, as well as a foot overbridge that was inaugurated in June. However, one of the escalators is out of service.

  • Oregon Is First State To Allow Tall-Timber Construction
Today's podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com.
SCHINDLER TO PROVIDE 207 UNITS TO INDONESIA DEVELOPMENTS
Building on its relationship with PT Trans Property and PT Trans Retail Indonesia, PT Berca Schindler Lifts has been selected to provide 207 elevators, escalators and moving walks to the Transpark mixed-use developments in Indonesia under four separate contracts. Consisting of four projects — Transpark Cibubur in Depok, Transpark Bekasi in Bekasi, Transpart Bintaro in Bintaro Jaya and Trans Studio Bali in Bali — the developments "aim to reinvent the traditional shopping experience by breaking the mold of the traditional retail mall and creating a four-in-one living concept." Including high-rise towers, the properties will include restaurants, stores, hotels and theme-park areas, all accessible to public transportation.

OREGON IS FIRST STATE TO ALLOW TALL-TIMBER CONSTRUCTION
Oregon has become the first U.S. state to allow construction of timber buildings taller than six stories, setting a precedent for the rest of the country, ArchDaily reports. The state building code addendum includes three new classifications: for timber buildings up to 18 stories or 270 ft., 12 stories or 180 ft., and nine stories or 85 ft. The addendum is part of a statewide program that allows alternate building techniques after technical details have been approved by an advisory council. An ad hoc committee of the International Code Council presented its findings to the Oregon Codes Division in April, and the state adopted all 14 of its recommendations, including standards and best practices for the load-bearing potential, fireproofing and seismic rating of timber materials.

HYUNDAI WINS BIG CONTRACTS IN CHINA, SOUTH KOREA
In one of several announcements in the summer Hyundai Elevator Newsletter, the company said it won a contract for 65 elevators and escalators to be installed in the Harbin Metro Line 1 extension in Harbin, China. The KRW7.4-billion (US$6.5-million) project broke ground in June with the installation of 10 elevators and 55 escalators at five subway stations. In South Korea, it won a bid for 31 elevators at 53-story multipurpose The Sharp Gravista in the planned city of Ilsan in South Korea's Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. The contract, worth KRW6 billion (US$5.3 million), is to install high-speed elevators reaching speeds up to 4 mps (20 units) and 3.5 mps (10 units). Hyundai plans to break ground in September and complete installation early next year. POSCO Engineering & Construction is in charge of construction of the building, situated next to Ilsan KINTEX Exhibition Center.

    SYRACUSE THYSSENKRUPP ELEVATOR BRANCH HONORED
The thyssenkrupp Elevator Syracuse branch was recently named one of the “Best Places to Work in Central NY.” Making the top-40 list in the "2018 Best Places to Work Awards" event, hosted by BizEventz and the Business Journal News Network, the branch is among those that will be honored at a September 12 ceremony.

HOME ELEVATORS’ POPULARITY CONTINUES TO GROW IN INDIA
Home elevators continue to become more popular in India, with residents going for utility, style or a blend of both, The Hindu reports. KONE India Managing Director Amit Gossain observes there has been an increase in elevators being added to existing buildings, and notes that, if a homeowner is planning to add one later, a hoistway should be included in the original plan. Mumbai-based Jet Elevator says people are developing health issues earlier in their lives, which has led to an increasing number of homeowners making provisions for elevators, even in homes that are only two stories. Customers are also looking for “smart” features such as touchscreens, as well as energy efficiency, which experts say can be provided by hydraulic units that only require power when ascending.
