Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
KEB AMERICA CERTIFIED TO NEW ISO STANDARD
KEB America, Inc. has announced the ISO 9001:2015 certification of its Shakopee, Minnesota, production facility. The certification was issued after the facility met the criteria set by The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and passed an audit displaying zero nonconformities. ISO 9001:2015 applies to a facility’s quality-management and quality-assurance systems. The company had previously been certified under 9001:2008. The 2015 standard is similar in many ways to the previous one, but with an additional focus on risk management. KEB was able to demonstrate processes to address issues posted by ISO in this area and reevaluated and updated its plans.
CANopen LIFT HOLDS PLUGFEST AND SIG MEETING
CAN in Automation (CiA) members met on March 13-14 in Nuremburg, Germany, to discuss the CiA 417 application profile and test their CANopen Lift products on interoperability. CiA reports CiA 417 for elevator control systems continues to gain acceptance in Europe, noting the recent membership of several elevator device suppliers in CiA. About 35 engineers from 20 companies participated, including manufacturers Meiller and Siemens, KEB, Variotech, and Ziehl-Abegg. CiA’s Special Interest Group (SIG) CANopen Lift discussed the next steps for CiA 417 development, agreeing to adapt the CANopen FD application layer for future versions. Changes will simplify the software, save CAN-IDs (which users are running out of) and other benefits.
LUXURY TOWER TO RISE IN MELBOURNE
An L-shaped residential building planned for Melbourne being touted as a luxury residence on one of the city's premier streets is set to rise, Domain reported in May. With expansive glass features and construction of textured concrete and custom Australian bricks, 85 Spring Street, as the building is called, will stand 39 stories and feature exterior and interior design by Bates Smart. According to realestate.com.au, 85 Spring Street will have 138 units. Completion is scheduled for late 2020.
THREE HURT WHEN ESCALATOR CHANGES DIRECTION
Three people at a New Jersey rail transit station were hurt when an escalator they were riding suddenly reversed direction, causing them to fall, northjersey.com reports. Police said the injured were riding up an escalator at NJ Transit's Secaucus Junction station on May 29 when it suddenly changed direction. Two of the injured declined medical treatment, but the third was taken to a hospital. An NJ Transit spokeswoman said the hospitalized rider did not suffer life-threatening injuries. The escalator was taken out of service while the issue was being investigated. It was determined to be a brake problem, which was quickly repaired, nj.com reported.

  • Foundation Work Begins on NYU Expansion
Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
OTIS WINS 171 UNITS FOR FRENCH RAILWAY
Otis France has been awarded a contract by SNCF French Rail to install 171 escalators and moving walks for northern France. Seventy-five Otis escalators will support the future Project Eole (East-West Express) stations: Porte Maillot, CNIT-La Défense and Nanterre La Folie. The units will be deployed over seven years. The contract also includes 94 escalators and two moving walks, covering renewal of equipment and maintenance in the existing Magenta and Haussmann Saint-Lazare stations. These units are to be installed over 10 years. The escalators will be from Otis’ heaviest line (520 NPE) and include steps fitted with sensors and cameras that analyze and record the state of each component to anticipate breakdowns and limit downtimes (Dr. Step™). The contract includes maintenance for 15 years and “mid-life” renovations for all units.
FOUNDATION WORK BEGINS ON NYU EXPANSION
Foundation work has begun for a huge expansion of New York University (NYU) in Greenwich Village, New York YIMBY reports. The 1.9-million-sq.-ft. project at 181 Mercer Street will include a 23-story building housing a sports center and a 556-seat performing-arts facility. There will actually be two adjacent structures totaling 588,000 sq. ft. and a landscaped public plaza. The complex will have an indoor pool, a track and fitness rooms. Both buildings will include office space and dining facilities. The expansion was designed by Davis Brody Bond with KieranTimberlake. Completion is expected in 2021.
DEVELOPERS DECIDE TO GO TALLER IN BROOKLYN
Plans for 19-story office building at 540 Fulton Street in downtown Brooklyn, New York, have been scrapped in favor of a 43-story, 511-ft.-tall mixed-use tower, City Realty reports. The new plan would bring 327 apartments within 236,869 sq. ft., along with 96,592 sq. ft. of commercial and office space on the first eight floors. Resident amenities include storage, bicycle and package rooms; a business center; a gym; two lounges on a ninth-floor terrace; and a rooftop deck and lounge. The office floors will have access to two terraces and a bicycle room. Marvel Architects, designer of the original structure, is on board for the redesigned project.
MAN FALLS TO HIS DEATH "CLOWNING AROUND" ON ESCALATOR
Police in Providence, Rhode Island, blame a man's fatal fall off an escalator on his "clowning around," several outlets, including KETV7, report. Witnesses at the Providence Place Mall on May 28 told police that the 45-year-old man was riding on the escalator handrail when he lost his balance and fell one floor to the mall's food court. He reportedly hit his head on a table and suffered "massive injuries." This was not the first fatality blamed on improper escalator use at the mall. In 2006, a man trying to jump between two escalators fell to his death.

NEW DETAILS OF BROOKLYN GROVE TOWER REVEALED
Developers of the under-construction Brooklyn Grove residential tower in downtown Brooklyn, New York, have released new renderings, New York YIMBY reports. The 27-story, 184-unit condominium building is being designed by a collaboration between ODA Architecture and Stephen B. Jacobs Group. Residents will enjoy a number of amenities, such as aquatic, fitness and entertainment areas, a rooftop deck, a pet spa and a children's playroom. Developers Adam America Real Estate, Slate Property Group and Vanke Co. had originally foreseen a 33-story, 150-unit building when they closed on the site in 2015. Prices for individual units will range from US$590,000 to US$2.5 million. Completion is expected in 2019.
NEW TALLEST TOWER PLANNED FOR SPOKANE, WASHINGTON
Plans for a 31-story mixed-use tower in Spokane, Washington, have been filed with city officials, The Spokesman-Review reports. The 354-ft.-tall tower, called Riverside Station, would sit at the entrance to the University District in downtown Spokane and become the city's tallest, surpassing the 20-story, 288-ft.-tall Bank of America Financial Center. Its 200,000 sq. ft. would mostly hold apartments, but floors 19-22 would hold office space. The design for the US$65-million tower would include setback levels at the eighth and 23rd floors, and includes an "architectural spire and clock" at the top level. The pre-development application anticipates construction beginning in August.
DELAYED ESCALATOR WORK BEGINS AT INDIAN RAIL JUNCTION
A long-delayed project to install escalators at the Erode Railway Junction in Erode, India, has begun, The Hindu reports. The junction is among the busiest rail stops in the region, but platform access has been limited to a steep stairway, which prompted strong demand for escalators from passengers. Railways that use the junction announced a plan to add escalators in January 2015, with completion expected by December 2015, but the work was delayed by several factors. The source said protests by "many" organizations led to the problems being worked out, with the project "expected to be completed soon."

Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com
GAL ADDS REGIONAL SERVICE CENTER IN MIAMI
Bronx, New York-based GAL Manufacturing Corp. has announced it will open a regional service center in Miami on June 1. GAL said the storefront provides large areas to display equipment and products from its family of companies, including Hollister-Whitney, Courion, Bore-Max and GAL Canada. It also encompasses a fully stocked warehouse, training and education area and the services of elevator professionals Technical Support Engineer Jose Rios and Customer Service Representative David Tejara. The address is 15825 NW 15th Avenue, Miami Gardens, and the phone number is (877) 425-7763.

47-STORY TWIN-TOWERED PROJECT COMPLETES IN NEW JERSEY
Construction is complete, and leasing has begun for phase two of The Modern, a pair of 47-story, 496-ft.-tall towers overlooking the George Washington Bridge and Hudson River in Fort Lee, New Jersey, New York YIMBY reports. The source says it is among the tallest twin-towered developments in the world, citing data from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects and developed by SJP Properties, The Modern has 900 rental apartments, along with an impressive array of amenities. A public park “reminiscent of [New York City’s] Central Park” with a 7,000-sq.-ft. restaurant is being built between the two towers, part of a continued effort to revitalize downtown Fort Lee.

EXPIRED SAFETY PERMITS PERSIST IN SAN DIEGO AND BEYOND
NBC Channel 7 reports 42% of the elevators and escalators in San Diego County — more than 5,400 — have expired safety inspection permits. Statewide, “tens of thousands” of conveyances lack valid permits: 50% in Los Angeles County and 42% in Northern California, including San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento. A spokesperson for the state Department of Industrial Relations (DIR)/OSHA called the findings a “snapshot in time,” explaining some units may be in the process of getting certificates renewed, which can take up to three months. DIR prioritizes inspection of new units, and a construction boom has stretched state inspection resources thin.

TREE-TOPPED TOWER IN NYC FINANCIAL DISTRICT POISED TO RISE
Demolition of five buildings at 75-83 Nassau Street in the Financial District of New York City (NYC) has wrapped, making way for a 40-story, 498-ft.-tall mixed-use building designed by ODA for Lexin Capital (ELENET 624), New York YIMBY reports. Distinguished by a "forest-like" multilevel rooftop amenities terrace, the building will have 229 apartments within 190,000 sq. ft. and 39,200 sq. ft. of commercial space on the bottom four floors: two retail topped by two office floors. There will be lounges on the fifth, 22nd and 25th floors, as well as a fitness center and space for more than 100 bicycles. Completion is anticipated by 2022.

PLAN CALLS FOR 62-STORY TOWER IN PANAMA
CentralAmericanData.com reports that a developer is planning a mixed-use tower in Bella Vista, Panama. DAO Panama Development, S.A., has submitted an Environmental Impact Study (EIA) to build a 62-story tower in the Panama City suburb that will encompass 40 floors of residential, two of commercial, four of office, two of amenities and 12 floors of parking, with the other two floors designated for building services. The total construction area is 92,782.6 m2 and will include 320 apartments. The investment was estimated at US$75 million.
