Political outsider Katie Valenzuela is maintaining a lead over establishment's incumbent Steve Hansen in the Sacramento City Council's District 4 race, and it could have implications in Elk Grove.

In November 2020, Sacramento County Voters will be asked to consider raising sales taxes by one-half percent. The sales tax increase,  Measure A, is proposed by the Sacramento Transportation Authority – the STA – to fund a variety of countywide transit needs.

If approved, Measure A would generate eight billion dollars over its 40-year life.

A small audience at a project workshop, Elk Grove City Councilmember Stephnie Nguyen commented, is an indication that proponents have done their work, and the community is satisfied with the product. If those comments about inverse relations are correct, then Dignity Health's future hospital in Elk Grove has broad community support.

Nguyen made those comments before a handful of people at the end of a workshop she sponsored in cooperation with Dignity Health on their future hospital on Wymark Drive in Elk Grove's District56 civic center area. The workshop was held at Dignity's outpatient surgical facility on Wymark Drive.

For only the third time since the city's 2000 incorporation, voters will have the chance to vote for a city councilmember without an incumbent on the ballot. That happened most recently for the District 4 seat in 2014, and in 2000 when the original city council was elected.

Given the interest in District 3, we have invited the four declared candidates to date to participate in a feature we are calling First Word. The four candidates are Maureen Craft, Amandeep Singh, Kevin Spease.
