As I mentioned in my last podcast, I like Facebook. It gives me an opportunity to dialogue with people I don’t know personally, and it allows me to get a sense of folks’ perspectives on important issues of the day.

Recently, a few of my more progressive and liberal Facebook friends have been somewhat agitated over the “Straight Pride Movement” and the parades and marches and rallies members of the movement are having across our country.

Frankly, I’m a little baffled by the movement myself. Apparently, the Straight Pride Movement was formed as a backlash against the LGBT Pride Movement. I guess the Straight Pride people feel sort of left out and are agitated themselves that they’re not getting the respect and equality they feel they deserve.

In this edition, we continue our discussions with business owners in Elk Grove’s Stonelake Landing shopping center whose enterprises are being negatively affected by their landlord, California Northstate University and their proposed $900-million unfunded hospital project.

Since the December 2018 announcement by California Northstate University of their plans to build a 400-bed hospital on the west side of Elk Grove, the project has been mired in a quagmire of controversy.

Today we talk with Matt Weaver who owns a business in the Stonelake Landing shopping center, which is owned by California Northstate University, about plans to demolishing the facility and kill several small businesses, several of which are minority-owned enterprises.

Weaver discusses his attempt to deal with California Northstate and how it has motivated him to consider more political involvement.

Also discussed is the involvement of former Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis as a community outreach representative for the school.

Over the last few years, one issue four members of the Elk Grove city council have been confronted with is the question of representation. Specifically, four council members Steve Detrick, Pat Hume, Stephanie Nguyen and Darren Suen have rejected calls that the city switch to by-district elections and representation.

Instead they have dug in their heels and support their less democratic at large system.

On Wednesday, August 21, the Elk Grove City Council will hold a special meeting on behalf of California Northstate University and their proposed hospital. It is a crucial vote that will affect Elk Grove's future.
