The point of this passage is that the unbelief of the crowd does not disrupt God’s plan. Those that are given to Him by the Father, will come. “The absolute sovereignty of God is the basis of Jesus’ confidence in the success of His mission . . . The security of salvation rests in the sovereignty of God, for God is the guarantee that “all” He has chosen will come to Him for salvation.”

Please notice that John is not embarrassed by writing about predestination and eternal security. He’s as comfortable as writing “whoever comes to Christ will never hunger and thirst”, along with “all the Father gives to Christ will come to Him.”

This passage teaches us so much. It teaches us what real Christian education is. We are reminded that learning only exists when it is lived out. This verse teaches us the importance of being good examples to those we teach. Our lives are one of the reasons they are encouraged to obey. This verse also reminds us that the Bible contains all that we need to live lives that are pleasing to God. So my question to the students this morning is simply this: Are you obeying what you have been taught? “Are you continuing in the things you have learned?”

“Saint Augustine famously said, “You made us for yourself, and our hearts find no peace until they rest in you.” I want to keep the spirit of his statement but tweak the words just a bit. If he was reading this passage, he might say, “You made us to hunger for you, and our starving souls find no nourishment until they feast on you.” Only Jesus can fill the emptiness inside. Only Jesus can quiet the growling of your soul. Only Jesus can give you life."

There is likely no Old Testament prophet more respected than Moses. He was the lawgiver, the liberator of Israel, and a worker of miracles. Moses had the unique privilege of speaking to God “face to face, as one speaks to a friend” (Exodus 33:11). But Jesus was better than Moses.
