  • What Happened to Simply Wanting Connection?

    Send us Fan Mail

The dating landscape has transformed dramatically, leaving singles across generations confused and frustrated. What's causing this disconnect in modern romance, and why are so many struggling to find meaningful connections?

Today's episode dives deep into the chasm between dating expectations and reality. After receiving overwhelming feedback from listeners of all ages about our previous dating discussion, I'm unpacking the fascinating dynamics at play. From independent women with increasingly specific partner criteria to men feeling unappreciated for traditional gestures, the fundamental issues seem to cross generational lines.

Have we created impossible standards? Women proudly proclaim they don't "need" men anymore—financially or otherwise—but what about simply wanting companionship and connection? Men express frustration with shifting expectations and the feeling that nothing they do seems quite right. The modern dating paradox leaves everyone questioning: is the bar set too high, or are we simply looking for the wrong things?

This episode examines what different generations value in relationships and how expectations have evolved. I share my perspective as someone who values having a provider and protector while maintaining independence, and I invite listeners from all backgrounds to contribute their experiences. What's on your dating criteria list? Are you flexible with those requirements? How do we bridge the gap between what we think we want and what might actually bring fulfillment?

Share your generation, your dating perspectives, and your questions! I'm looking for guests from different age groups to continue this important conversation on future episodes. Subscribe for Mindful Mondays and Wisdom Wellness Wednesdays as we navigate relationships, boundaries, self-advocacy, and growth together.

  • The Lonely Path: Navigating Relationship Troubles When Support Systems Fail

    Send us Fan Mail

Have you ever found yourself wondering when "enough is enough" in a relationship? That moment when you've tried everything, but still feel stuck at an impossible crossroads?

Life rarely sends challenges one at a time. Instead, they often arrive as overwhelming waves that test every boundary we've established. In this raw, unfiltered episode, I open up about navigating my two-year marriage through ongoing difficulties despite therapy and communication. Just as these relationship questions reached a critical point, my beloved 12-year-old dog received a diagnosis for an incurable disease—one that mirrors my own autoimmune condition—adding both emotional and financial strain to an already fragile situation.

The ground beneath my feet seemed to disappear completely when a close friendship suddenly went on "pause" without warning, followed by the painful discovery that family members I'd counted on for support instead chose judgment and distance. "This is too much," they said. "You're playing victim," they warned—precisely when compassion was most needed.

Through tears and vulnerability, I share the coping mechanisms I'm actively pursuing: regular therapy, consistent exercise to manage stress and autoimmune symptoms, and dedicated self-reflection to understand my role in these situations. But when traditional support systems fail, where do we turn? Do we retreat inward like "a crab in its shell"? Seek spiritual solutions? Or is there another path forward when facing multiple personal crises simultaneously?

This isn't just my story—it's a universal question about human resilience when everything falls apart at once. I'm reaching out for your wisdom, your experiences, your hard-won insights. Share your thoughts through any platform where you listen, or text in your advice. As my birthday approaches, I'm holding onto hope that new beginnings are possible, even from the darkest places. Your support not only helps the podcast grow but might just provide the lifeline needed during this challenging chapter.

  • Embracing Authenticity in a World of Judgment

    Send us Fan Mail

When chronic illness meets unwavering commitment, something beautiful happens. That's exactly what I experienced this Pride Month as I battled through some of the worst flare-ups of my oral lichen planus—an incurable autoimmune disease that leaves my mouth feeling like it's literally on fire—to attend San Francisco Pride celebrations.

For the past four years, attending Pride has become a deeply personal tradition honoring friends and family members in the LGBTQ+ community. This year was special as I finally experienced the legendary Dolores Park celebration. Despite barely managing one meal a day and struggling with severe pain, I was determined to participate. Though my body eventually rebelled against the combination of sun exposure, festive drinks, and nutritional deficits, the experience was worth every moment of discomfort.

Some have questioned how I reconcile being a practicing Christian with my enthusiastic Pride support. The answer is simple: compassion transcends judgment. The LGBTQ+ individuals I've met at Pride events consistently demonstrate extraordinary kindness, warmth, and authenticity. Their personal lives don't diminish their humanity—these same people might be your nurse before surgery, your flight attendant, or the stranger who stops to help when you're stranded. My Mindful Monday message is about embracing authenticity and allowing people the freedom to be their true selves without fear or judgment.

Have you attended Pride celebrations? What traditions hold special meaning in your life despite challenges? Share your experiences and join our upcoming discussion about Independence Day traditions. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe to Elkevate your Life on all major platforms!

  • Fear Is a Liar

    Send us Fan Mail

Have you ever wondered what's truly holding you back from pursuing your dreams? The answer might be simpler than you think.

Fear can paralyze us in ways we don't even realize. Whether it's the student afraid to speak in class or the professional hesitant to pursue a passion project, these invisible barriers often stem from what I call "False Evidence Appearing Real." Throughout this episode, I share intimate stories of transformation – both my own journey from wallflower to confident public speaker and the inspiring breakthrough of an eighth-grade student who overcame his social anxiety to deliver a presentation that initially terrified him.

We explore several powerful interpretations of fear, from "Forget Everything And Run" to "Face Everything And Rise," examining how our response to fear determines whether it becomes a roadblock or a stepping stone. Through practical strategies like breaking challenges into manageable steps and gradually expanding our comfort zones, we discover that courage isn't about being fearless – it's about moving forward despite feeling afraid.

The most profound revelation comes through the stories shared: that moment when my student realized he had conquered his fear and could now face similar challenges with newfound confidence, or my own transformation through deliberately seeking uncomfortable situations like approaching strangers and speaking publicly. These aren't just feel-good anecdotes – they're proof that what seems impossible becomes achievable when we confront our fears directly.

What fears are holding you back? I'd love to hear your stories of triumph or struggles you're still working through. Share your experiences in the comments, and let's create a community of support as we all work to elevate our lives by facing our fears head-on. Remember to like, follow, and subscribe to join our growing community of "Elkyvators"!

  • The GLP-1 Revolution: Are We Solving Weight Issues or Creating New Problems?

    Send us Fan Mail

Weight loss injections are everywhere now - commercials, social media feeds, celebrity gossip. But are these GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic the miracle solution we've been waiting for or just another shortcut with hidden costs?

Having tried every diet imaginable - Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Atkins, keto, even the dreaded cabbage diet - I understand the allure of something that simply turns off hunger. That "food noise" can be deafening. Yet while these medications are genuine game-changers for people with diabetes or clinical obesity, their widespread use raises serious questions about our relationship with food, exercise, and our bodies.

The side effects can't be ignored. "Ozempic face" is definitely real - I've seen it firsthand. And what happens when you stop taking these medications? Most people regain the weight, sometimes with additional complications. Women face particularly impossible standards - we're criticized for gaining weight, then judged for using medical interventions to lose it. I share my own complicated journey with oral lichen planus, which limits what foods I can eat without painful flare-ups, making traditional "healthy eating" advice nearly impossible to follow.

The fundamental truth remains: sustainable health comes from creating positive habits around nutrition and finding joyful ways to move our bodies. For me, that's outdoor activities rather than dreaded gym sessions. A body in motion stays in motion - but should that motion come naturally or from a weekly injection? Share your thoughts on this controversial topic and subscribe for more candid conversations about health, wellness, and navigating life's challenges.

  • Confronting Your Past to Embrace Your Future

    Send us Fan Mail

In this deeply personal episode, I explore how our childhood experiences shape adult behaviors through the lens of "Your Inner Child of the Past" by W. Hugh Misseldine. The emotional goodbye to my graduating students triggers profound reflections on my own perfectionist upbringing and healing journey.

    • Understanding how perfectionist parents create adults who never feel "good enough"
    • Examining how punishment cycles from childhood manifest in self-punishment as adults
    • Recognizing why we often parent others the way we needed to be parented
    • Exploring the connection between childhood wounds and our adult behaviors
    • Learning how to look inward and heal the inner child through self-reflection
    • Embracing growth and self-improvement as ongoing practices
    • Acknowledging that healing childhood wounds takes time but is always possible

  • Men's Mental Health: Breaking the Silence

    Send us Fan Mail

June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, bringing attention to the struggles many men face but rarely discuss. Working with special needs students and being married to someone diagnosed with mental illness in his sixties has taught me valuable lessons about compassion and understanding.

    • Mental illness includes many conditions beyond schizophrenia, such as bipolar disorder, anxiety, PTSD, and autism
    • Depression is more than sadness; anxiety is more than worry; OCD is more than obsessions
    • Men in middle age to older ages particularly struggle with identifying and expressing their feelings
    • People with mental health conditions often deal with mood swings even while on medication
    • Early diagnosis and support can make a tremendous difference in quality of life
    • Being intentional in our communication and practicing kindness is essential when interacting with those struggling
    • Listen without judgment and create space for vulnerability
