Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

Listen Later

Welcome to Offscript, the podcast where literature meets cinema. Each week, hosts Bri & Alli compare books to their movie adaptations — exploring what worked, what didn’t, and whether the book really was better than the movie. From timeless classics to today’s bestsellers, we break down characters, themes, and the creative choices that shape stories on page and screen.

🎬 This Week on Offscript: Ella Enchanted

This week, Bri & Alli dive headfirst into a sparkling, magic-infused adventure with one of the most charming modern fairy-tale adaptations: Ella Enchanted. Based on the beloved novel by Gail Carson Levine and brought to the screen by director Tommy O’Haver, this whimsical story blends satire, heart, and classic fairy-tale flair—with just the right touch of mischievous magic.

Story Summary:

At her birth, Ella is “gifted” by the well-meaning (but wildly irresponsible) fairy Lucinda with the magical curse of obedience—forcing her to follow any command given to her, no matter how dangerous or absurd. After her mother’s death, Ella finds herself trapped under the thumb of her spiteful stepfamily, Dame Olga and her equally awful daughters. Unwilling to live as a puppet to the world’s whims, Ella sets off on a quest to find Lucinda and break the spell once and for all. Along the way, she encounters ogres, elves, scheming royals, and—of course—the charming and unexpectedly honorable Prince Charmont.

📚 Coming Up Next on Offscript: 12 Years a Slave

Next week, Bri & Alli take a powerful and deeply reflective journey into 12 Years a Slave. They’ll explore Solomon Northup’s harrowing 1853 memoir and its critically acclaimed film adaptation, diving into the brutality, resilience, and unwavering pursuit of freedom that define his extraordinary true story.

Don’t miss their discussion of how the memoir’s raw honesty is translated to the screen and why Solomon Northup’s voice remains essential in understanding history—and humanity—today.
