Welcome to Offscript, the podcast where literature meets cinema. Each week, hosts Bri & Alli compare books to their movie adaptations — exploring what worked, what didn’t, and whether the book really was better than the movie. From timeless classics to today’s bestsellers, we break down characters, themes, and the creative choices that shape stories on page and screen.
🎬 This Week on Offscript: The Subtle Knife
This week, Bri & Alli dive into The Subtle Knife, comparing Philip Pullman’s brilliant second novel in the His Dark Materials trilogy with its adaptation in Season 2 of the BBC/HBO series His Dark Materials. Developed for television and adapted by lead writer Jack Thorne, Season 2 weaves together two interconnected stories: Lyra Belacqua’s escape into the eerie, deserted city of Cittàgazze and Will Parry’s search for his missing father from our own world. Through the experiences of Lyra and Will, both the novel and television series explore themes of destiny, the loss of innocence, grief, trust, and the dangerous pursuit of truth. While the show elevates the political stakes of the Magisterium and expands on the chilling, complex motivations of Mrs. Coulter, the novel provides a more atmospheric and intimate look at the lore of the knife itself and the haunting history of the worlds they traverse.
Synopsis:
As Lyra’s journey continues, she meets Will, a boy from another world who possesses a
mysterious knife capable of cutting between parallel universes. As the two become
bound by fate, they are pulled into a growing war involving powerful forces seeking
control of Dust and the many worlds connected by hidden portals. Together, they must
navigate danger, trust, and sacrifice as their choices begin to reshape the balance
between entire realities.
Author: Philip Pullman
Director: Jamie Childs, William McGregor, and Leanne Welham
Screenplay Writer: Jack Thorne, Namsi Khan, Francesca Gardiner, Sarah Quintrell, and
