This text combines the death of John the Baptist, the return of the disciples from their first mission, and a failed attempt at a restful getaway. Yet, in all of this we see Jesus’ character shine through as he continues to serve others. We also see Jesus as the great
multiplier, taking the meager resources of the disciples, breaking them, and using them to be the hands and feet of his blessing.

The disciples were sent out by Jesus on mission, giving them the authority to heal the sick, cast out demons, and proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God.

Jesus continues to display his authority, this time over sickness of death.
