Friendship is an affective relationship, at first without romantic-sexual characteristics, between two people. In a broad sense, it is a human relationship involving mutual knowledge and affection, and loyalty to the point of altruism. In this regard, it can be said that a relationship between parents and children, between siblings, other family members, spouses or boyfriends, can also be a friendship relationship, although not necessarily.
Friendship may originate from a species survival instinct, with the need to protect and be protected by other beings. Some friends call themselves "best friends". Best friends often know each other more than their own family members and spouse, functioning as a confidant. To reach this degree of friendship, a lot of trust and loyalty are deposited.
Often, friends' interests are similar and demonstrate a sense of cooperation. But there are also people who are not necessarily interested in the same topic, but like to share moments together, for the company and friendship of the other, even if the activity is not their preference.
Friendship is one of the most common interpersonal relationships that most human beings have in their lives. In case of loss of friendship, reconciliation and forgiveness are suggested. Carl Rogers says that friendship "is accepting each other as he really is."
It is popularly said that "a dog is man's best friend".
Friend's Day (also known as "Friendship Day") is celebrated on July 20th.
Friendship has been considered by religion and popular culture as a human experience of vital importance, including having been sanctified by various religions. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the friendship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu is related. The Greco-Romans had, among other examples, the friendship between Orestes and Pílades. In the Bible, the friendship between David (who would later become king in Israel) and Jonathan (son of King Saul) is mentioned in Book 1 of Samuel. The canonical gospels speak of a statement by Jesus, "No love can be greater than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." Solomon wrote the wisdom of friendship in his Proverbs: "A friend loves at all times, and a brother in trouble."
Friendship relationships are widely portrayed both in literature and in movies and television. As examples, we can mention: Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, Sherlock Holmes and Watson, the Three Musketeers, The Fat and the Skinny, The Three Stooges, the Friends series, among others.
I hope you have enjoyed this take on friendship, thank you for listening to me, my friends.
